Bengal: Two arrested in Santipur for raping woman on pretext of job

Kolkata, July 21, 2026
The police on Tuesday arrested two persons for allegedly raping a divorced woman under the pretext of getting her a job. The incident took place in Santipur of Nadia district.

The accused had also threatened to make viral her compromising photographs and videos if she told anyone about the incident. She was even threatened with death. The police arrested the two accused persons within 12 hours after receiving the complaint from the woman.

It is learnt that the victim is a resident of Shantipur in Nadia. A few days ago, she contacted Shekhar Biswas, a resident of Babla-Gobindpur Dakshin Kayasthapara, to seek work. Allegedly, Shekhar introduced her to Manik Debnath, the owner of a local wardrobe factory, for work.

After that, Shekhar called the woman at various places, on the pretext of offering her work. He allegedly took her to a hotel and raped her multiple times. He started blackmailing her by showing photographs and videos of their intimate moments.

However, Shekhar was not alone. Manik is also alleged to have raped the woman in the same way. He too recorded videos and took photographs, threatening to spread them on social media if she told anyone.

He also threatened to kill her. As a result, the victim could not speak out for a long time due to fear.

On Monday, the victim decided to put aside her fear and approached Santipur police station. Based on her complaint, the police quickly launched an investigation and arrested the two accused within just 12 hours. The arrested will be produced in a court on Wednesday. The victim has demanded the strictest punishment for them.

“Two persons have been arrested based on the complaint lodged by the woman. A case under relevant sections has been registered against the two. They will be produced in a court tomorrow. The police will seek their custody for further interrogation in the matter. Investigation is on,” said a senior officer of Nadia district police.(Agency)
