UK launches new Point-Based Immigration System; Indians stand to benefit

Mohali, February 21, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Britain unveiled a new points-based immigration system aimed at attracting the “brightest and the best” talent from the world and closing its doors to cheap, low-skilled migration.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel announced the launch of this new immigration system, which will come into force from January 1, 2021 at the end of the transition period after the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU).

“This immigration system will end free movement, reassert control of our borders and restore public trust,” a statement by the Home Office said.

The new system will provide simple, effective, and flexible arrangements for skilled workers to come to the UK. It will apply equally to the EU and non-EU countries like India.

The system is based on awarding points for specific skills, qualifications/attributes, salaries and professions. The visas will only be awarded to those who gain sufficient points. The top priority will be given to those with the highest skills and the greatest talents, including scientists, engineers and academics.

In order to apply for a permanent visa under the new system, prospective candidates will need to have a job offer from a government approved sponsor and at an appropriate skill level. They are also required to demonstrate a certain level of English language.

Candidates are required to scores at least 70 points based on the level of salary they are offered and their abilities.

The new points-based system will also expand the skills threshold for skilled workers, which is to be downgraded to A-level instead of degree level under the current system. This will provide greater flexibility and ensure UK has access to a large number of skilled workers.

There will also be special exemptions for certain occupations facing skill shortages such as doctors and nurses.

Further details on the Points-Based Immigration System including detailed guidance regarding the points tables, qualifications and occupations facing shortage will be provided by the UK Home Office in due course.
