Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the representative body of Sikhs today started Sri Akhand Path Sahib at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, for release of Sikh prisoners including Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, Prof Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and others, who are lodged in different Indian jails for the past nearly three decades.
It is notable that the SGPC and Panthak jathebandis (organisations) are raising their voice for a very long time for the release of Sikh prisoners, who served in the jails for the Sikh Qaum (nation). Even SGPC’s general houses have passed resolutions demanding the release of Sikh prisoners and sent the same to the Government of India (GOI), but despite passage of nearly three decades and announcement of GOI, the Sikh prisoners continue to serve in different Indian jails.
SGPC President Advocate S. Harjinder Singh said, “SGPC has always made efforts for the release of Sikh prisoners and for the same, Sri Akhand Path Sahib has been started at historical Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, Sri Amritsar, under the auspices of the Guru Sahib and the bhog (concluding ceremony) of the same will be held on April 30. After the bhod, ardas (prayer) will be done before the Guru Sahib for the release of Sikh prisoners.”
Those present on the occasion of start of Sri Akhand Path Sahib including SGPC Executive Committee member S. Harjap Singh, members Bhai Surjit Singh, Advocate S. Bhagwant Singh, Bhai Manjit Singh, Dharam Prachar Committee member Bhai Ajaib Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal leader S. Gurpartap Singh, SGPC additional secretary S. Paramjit Singh, manager Sri Darbar Sahib S. Sulakhan Singh, assistant secretary S. Gurmeet Singh, manager S. Baghel Singh, S. Sukhraj Singh, superintendent S. Malkeet Singh and a large number of Sangat.
