The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today held a ‘dharna’ at the Shaheed Udham Singh chowk to demand registration of an attempt to murder case against Congress legislator Raminder Awla and his son Jatin Awla as well as police officials who assisted Congress goons in launching a murderous attack on Akali workers and SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The dharna, which was led by the SAD President, saw Akali workers congregating at the spot to demand action against the goondaism unleashed by the Congress party which was preventing SAD candidates from filing their nomination papers for the Jalalabad municipal committee elections.
Speaking on the occasion amidst slogans of “Sukhbir teri soch te pehra deyaange thok ke”, Mr Sukhbir Badal said a mob led by the Awla’s son Jatin attacked Akali workers as well as his vehicle immediately after they entered the SDM complex. “The purpose was to stop Akali candidates from filing their nomination papers.
A murderous attack was launched against us with Congress goons using weapons to indulge in firing which resulted in bullet injuries to three persons”. He said two Akali workers had been admitted to the Faridkot medical college hospital.
Asserting that Awla had got goons from Uttar Pradesh to intimidate Akali workers in Jalalabad, Mr Badal said Akali workers had always stood up to oppression. “Even today despite being targeted for murder, Akali workers stood their ground and forced the goons to run away. I also remained in the SDM office complex till all our candidates filed their nominations”.
Asserting that it was less than one year to the next assembly elections, Mr Badal said the SAD would not only scrap all false cases registered against the people by the Congress and Awla’s gang but would also take all police officials who had assisted the goons to task.
He also asserted that the party dharna here would continue till justice was not done in the matter and attempt to murder cases were not registered against the Congress mla and police officials who had assisted the goons in attacking Akali workers.
Those present on the occasion included Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Harpreet Singh, Kanwarjit Singh Barkandi, Parambans Romana, Vardev Mann, Avtar Minna, Satinderjit Manta, Balkaur Singh, Prem Valecha, Ashok Aggarwal and Montu Vohra.
