The Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in close coordination with Government of Punjab, Dr. Baljit Kaur, Cabinet Minister, Department of Social Security Women and Child Development monitored the ongoing initiatives related to child protection and welfare work in Mohali, today.
Ms. Gunjeet Ruchi Bawa, Vice-Chairperson, Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, led the visit in line with the State Government’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the rights of children across Punjab.
As part of her visit, Ms. Bawa held an important meeting with senior officials of the district administration and police to assess the measures being undertaken for safeguarding the rights of children. She interacted with Ms. Sonam Chaudhary, Additional Deputy Commissioner (D), Mohali; Harmandeep Singh Hans, Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohali; and Ms. Deepika Singh Sekhon, SP (PBI) Mohali.
The discussions focused on strengthening police initiatives dedicated to child protection, ensuring proper mechanisms for child safety, and addressing challenges faced by vulnerable children in society.
In addition to the review meeting, Ms. Gunjeet Ruchi Bawa visited Gur Aasra Trust, a Child Care Institution in Mohali, where she was warmly welcomed by Ms. Kulvir Kaur, President of Gur Aasra Trust, and Mr. Satvir Singh, Founder of the Trust. During the visit, detailed discussions were held on key issues, including the need for a quota system for children in higher education, the establishment of new shelter homes for children rescued during raids and under the POCSO Act, and the appointment of qualified psychiatrists for the holistic development and rehabilitation of children.
Ms. Bawa also appreciated the dedicated contribution of Dr. Bhavneet Bharti from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali, for her commendable work in the field of child welfare.
Ms. Bawa was accompanied by Nikhil Arora, District Programme Officer, SAS Nagar; Smt. Navpreet Kaur, District Child Protection Officer, Mohali; Manpreet Kaur, Protection Officer (IC); and Ms. Gurwinder Kaur, ORW during the visit.
Ms. Bawa emphasized that the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, working in close coordination with the state government, will continue to actively monitor and evaluate child welfare measures across Punjab. She reiterated the government’s commitment to providing a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment for every child.
Furthermore, she appreciated the efforts of the district administration and police officials for their proactive role in safeguarding children and highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies, institutions, and civil society organizations.
The Vice-Chairperson assured that the Commission will not only review but also strengthen monitoring mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of child protection laws and welfare programs.
She added that such visits are part of a continuous effort to bridge the gap between policy and ground realities, thereby making child protection a more robust and impactful initiative throughout Punjab.
