The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has strongly opposed the recurring hike in diesel and petrol prices by the Union Government, demanding immediate relief to the people at large by way of reduction in tax liabilities imposed by the Central and State Governments on petroleum products amid the Corona-induced national lockdown.
In a statement issued by party headquarters in Chandigarh on Friday, senior leader of the party and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema, said the country was passing through a critical phase due to the Corona pandemic, forcing peoples’ occupations etc to a standstill, rendering them jobless.
He lamented the government, instead of providing succour to the people cooped up in their homes for months; the governments had made their lives difficult by raising prices of essential commodities of daily use with the inflation touching a new high. Cheema added that with the recurring rise in the prices of petroleum products, everything had gone out of the reach of the common man.
The LoP said that the prices of crude oil in the international market had crashed down considerably, but the Union government was leveraging it to benefit a handful of corporate houses, like the Ambanis, Adani, instead of bailing out the common man, as a result of which the petrol prices had gone up by Rs 2.74 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.83 per litre in a week.
He demanded that the people should be given relief especially when the prices of petroleum products and coal were a record time cheaper in the international market.
Cursing Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Cheema questioned why she did not raise her voice against such anti-people and anti-Punjab decisions pushed by the Modi government.
Cheema also lashed out at Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, saying that the state government was not far behind in sucking the blood of people of Punjab, like the Modi government at the centre, which was why Punjab was levying the highest VAT on diesel and petrol, as a result of which, diesel and petrol were expensive in Punjab than those in its neighboring states.
Harpal Singh Cheema said that if the Center and Punjab government did not provide relief to the people in the diesel and petrol prices, the Aam Aadmi Party, would be forced to take along the common people of the state and launch a nationa-wide stir against the state and central government.
