Malaika Arora’s Reflections on Her Childhood

In 2022, Malaika Arora spoke candidly in an interview about her “wonderful” yet challenging childhood. She revealed how she had to face tough times from a young age, particularly after her parents, Anil Arora and Joyce Polycarp, divorced when she was just 11 years old.

Malaika and Her Sister Raised by Their Mother

Following the divorce, Malaika and her younger sister, Amrita Arora, who was six years old at the time, moved from Thane to Chembur with their mother, Joyce Polycarp. Despite the challenges, their mother raised them with resilience and strength. Reflecting on her upbringing, Malaika shared in an interview with Grazia India, “I had a wonderful childhood, but it wasn’t easy. In fact, in retrospect, the word I would use to describe it is tumultuous. But tough times teach you important lessons too.”

Lessons Learned from Her Mother’s Strength

Malaika also spoke about how her parents’ separation allowed her to see her mother in a new light. She learned valuable lessons in independence and work ethic from her mother’s example. “My parents’ separation allowed me to observe my mother through a new and unique lens. I learned a rock-steady work ethic and the value of getting up each morning to do whatever it takes to become fiercely independent. Those early lessons are the cornerstones of my life and professional journey. I am still fiercely independent; I value my freedom and live life on my terms,” she added.
