EcoSikh welcomes Biden’s decision to nominate Ajay Banga for the World Bank

EcoSikh has welcomed Ajay Singh Banga being nominated for the position of the World Bank. Dr. Rajwant Singh, Global President of EcoSikh said, “The announcement of Ajay Banga Former CEO of Mastercard’s appointment for the role of the head of the world bank is a positive development for the global community conscious about the impact of climate change on the planet. His ability to mobilize public-private resources to address the most pressing issues of our times including climate change was the top factor that prompted US President Joe Biden to announce his nomination for the role.”
Biden said in a statement that Banga is “uniquely equipped to lead the World Bank at this critical moment in history.” Many in the world community have been pressing for a change in the way this major financial institution operates and how it would address the emerging global crises like climate change, food security and the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr. Singh added, “The bank remains at the centre of global finance, especially for middle-income countries, with Banga at the helm of the institution, the climate agenda, is expected to be at the centre stage and we will hopefully see it becoming more active in the functioning of the bank along with an increase in the credit available for the countries around the world to switch towards green energy.”
He added, “Banga has successfully led companies with a market share of billions including Mastercard and has implemented policies promoting women’s empowerment, and equality and created jobs for people. His expertise in making businesses more empathetic towards their customers and society at large will surely prove to be an asset for the prestigious institute he is set to take charge of.Dr. Singh further stated, ” We sincerely hope that Banga works toward reducing the gap between rich and poor nations and helps create a safety net for those suffering around the world due to poverty.”
Ajay Banga’s nomination is subject to US Senate’s approval which is a formality. Banga studied at the St. Stephen’s College Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad. Banga’s elder brother Manvinder is an IIT Delhi graduate. Their father retired at Lt. Gen. of the Indian Army.
Dr. Rajwant Singh is also the senior advisor to the National Sikh Campaign. He said, ” Banga’s position and his role will also help create better awareness about Sikhs and the turban around the world.”
