Congress defends Jairam Ramesh’s ‘two-third majority’ remark, BJP hits back

New Delhi, June 25, 2026

Congress leaders on Thursday backed party leader Jairam Ramesh’s recent remark that the BJP is seeking “two-thirds majority to end reservations and amend the Constitution”. However, the BJP lashed out, saying those who had imposed Emergency don’t have any right to speak about the Constitution.

Speaking to IANS, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai said whatever Jairam Ramesh has alleged is absolutely correct.

“The way BJP is buying MLAs, this shows that they want to change the Constitution and weaken its strength,” he alleged.

Supporting Ramesh’s remarks, Congress MP Rakesh Rathore said: “They (BJP) don’t want that the oppressed section in the country gets to be a part of the mainstream. That is why the BJP wants to amend the Constitution and also that is why MPs are being bought in crores.”

“They want to create a Constitution of their own, which is why they want to achieve a two-thirds majority (in the Parliament). Everything is due to the BJP’s dark mindset,” he remarked.

However, BJP leader Gourav Vallabh launched a harsh critique on the Congress, asking the party to “apologise” to the citizens for the imposition of Emergency in 1975, by the then Indira Gandhi-led government.

“Jairam Ramesh and all leaders of his party should collectively stand and apologise to the entire country for what they did in 1975, when they worked to undermine the Constitution. The fundamental rights of the people were abolished by the Congress during that period,” he told IANS.

Vallabh remarked that the then Congress government had completely destroyed the Constitutional establishments.

“Indira Gandhi had made herself the centre of the regime. Even today, people who lived through that period, are horrified thinking about the events that took place at that time,” he said.

The BJP leader emphasised that the millennials, Generation Z and Generation Alpha need to be reminded that the Congress had “hatched a conspiracy to destroy the Constitution in 1975”.

“It was the people of the country who defeated that conspiracy,” he added.

He also said that those people who can impose ‘Emergency’ in the country, “don’t have any right to speak about the Constitution”.

“The sin committed by the Congress by imposing Emergency can never be forgiven,” he asserted.

Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Emergency’s imposition a “grave sin” and “darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy”.

Targeting the Congress, he asked citizens to “never forgive nor forget” those who imposed the Emergency in the country.(Agency)
