Amritsar, April 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla today expressed serious concern in Parliament over the rapidly increasing cases of cancer in Punjab.
He stated that earlier, cancer cases were more prevalent in the Malwa region, but now the Majha region—especially Amritsar—is also witnessing a sharp rise. Data from the Chief Minister Cancer Relief Scheme also indicates that the number of patients in Amritsar is continuously increasing.
He pointed out that cancer treatment is extremely expensive and beyond the reach of common and poor people. The treatment is prolonged, and in most cases, the disease is detected late, making it difficult to save the patient’s life.
As a result, many families are financially devastated, and their businesses also suffer. He also highlighted the reasons behind the rising cancer cases, stating that: There is a lack of proper management of sewage and drainage in cities Tung Dhab Drain has become a major source of pollution Excessive use of pesticides in agriculture Harmful elements, even uranium, are reportedly being found in groundwater.
He said it is the responsibility of governments to ensure clean and safe drinking water for people and to strictly control pollution.
Gurjeet Singh Aujla urged the central government to provide better and affordable treatment facilities for cancer patients. He also demanded that under the Prime Minister’s Relief Scheme, cancer patients should be given at least ₹10 lakh in financial assistance so that no patient is deprived of treatment due to lack of funds.
