AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat wins Jalandhar West by-election, defeats BJP’s Sheetal Angural by a huge margin

Jalandhar, July 13, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mohinder Bhagat has won the by-election of Jalandhar West Constituency.

He defeated BJP candidate Sheetal Angural by a huge margin of 37,325 votes.

The winning candidate Mohinder Bhagat got 55,246 votes while Angural got only 17921. Congress candidate Surinder Kaur secured 16757 votes and came third.

Surjit Kaur, the candidate announced by Shiromani Akali Dal but later withdrawn from the fray, got 1242 votes while Binder Kumar Lakha of BSP got 734.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann himself led the campaign for this seat. To ensure his candidate’s victory, he decided to remain personally present in Jalandhar and took a residence on rent where he moved and camped with his family.

In this election, except for the BJP, the security deposits of all the other candidates, including the Akali Dal and the BSP, were forfeited. A total of 16 candidates were in the fray for this election.

It may be mentioned that this seat was declared vacant due to the resignation of AAP MLA Sheetal Angural.  AAP Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural who had joined the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections, was the BJP candidate this time. On the other side, AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat, a son of former Minister Bhagat Chuni Lal, originally belonged to BJP. He had joined AAP earlier and was fielded from the constituency by the party.
