The importance of conveying Amritsar’s rich cultural and historical heritage to the new generation was emphasized by Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney during a Heritage Walk organized by the Tourism Department of Punjab on the occasion of World Heritage Day. This initiative aims to help younger generations understand the significance of the city’s culture and history.
To achieve this, the Deputy Commissioner announced the launch of a QR code system to provide information about Amritsar’s heritage to the thousands of pilgrims who visit the city daily.
Many pilgrims are unaware of the rich history that Amritsar holds, and now, with the help of the district administration, a QR code has been introduced at key locations such as the bus stand, railway station, airport, and major city squares. Visitors can scan these QR codes with their smartphones to access detailed information about the city’s historical sites in Hindi, Punjabi, and English.
Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, alongside the Voice of Amritsar and the Aghaaz NGO, led the Heritage Walk, which began at Town Hall and passed through key heritage sites such as Gurdwara Saragarhi, Qila Ahluwalia, Jalebi Wala Chowk, Udasi Ashram Akhara Sangla Wala, Darshani Deori, Chaurasti Attari, Baba Bohar, Katra Kharian Street, and the old bazaars, culminating back at Town Hall.
Sawhney emphasized that the primary goal of the walk is to educate the younger generation and visitors about Amritsar’s deep-rooted history and rich cultural heritage. She highlighted that the QR code system would be especially beneficial for pilgrims, providing them with easily accessible information about the city’s most important buildings and heritage sites.
She further underlined that Amritsar is one of the oldest cities in India, with a history that is priceless, and preserving this heritage is a collective responsibility. Sawhney also urged parents to teach their children about the city’s legacy to ensure that future generations are aware of and proud of their heritage.
Several prominent individuals participated in the event, including SDM Mankamal Chahal, Assistant Commissioner Gursimran Kaur, Red Cross Secretary Samson Masih, Tehsildar Rajinder Kaur, Convenor of INTACH Chapter Gagandeep Singh Virk, Guide and President of Amritsar Foundation Gurinder Singh Johal, and Tourist Officer Sukhmandeep Singh. A large number of schoolchildren and citizens also joined the walk, contributing to the success of the event.
