Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha Urges Writers to Join July 25 Jalandhar Protest in Defence of Democratic Rights

Chandigarh, July 23, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha (Regd.) has appealed to the literary fraternity across Punjab to participate in large numbers in a protest scheduled to be held at Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall, Jalandhar, on July 25 at 11 am, in support of democratic rights and civil liberties.

The organisation extended its support to the protest being organised against the alleged assault on youth and students by police and persons allegedly associated with the RSS in Delhi, and what it described as attacks on democratic rights.

In a joint statement issued by Sabha President Darshan Buttar, General Secretary Sushil Dusanjh, Senior Vice-President Makkhan Singh Kuhar, and Office Secretary Deep Devinder Singh, the organisation said that expressing one’s views peacefully, struggling for public causes and exercising democratic rights are constitutional rights guaranteed to every citizen.

The statement said every attempt to suppress dissent through police force or violence runs contrary to the spirit of democracy and the values enshrined in the Constitution, and therefore deserves to be firmly opposed by all democratic forces.

The office-bearers said writers and intellectuals represent the conscience of society. They added that whenever civil liberties, democratic rights and constitutional values come under attack, the literary community has a responsibility to stand with the people rather than remain silent and to raise its voice in defence of democratic principles.

The Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha also appealed to writers, poets, fiction writers, playwrights, critics, journalists and literary and cultural activists across Punjab to attend the July 25 protest in large numbers and express solidarity in defence of democratic rights, civil liberties and constitutional values.
