Newlywed couple found hanging in Muzaffurpur, police probe suspicious deaths

Patna, July 20, 2026
A newly married couple was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, with their bodies discovered hanging in separate rooms of a house, prompting a police investigation into the deaths.

The incident has shocked residents of Nariyar Nawada village under the Motipur police station area. Police have launched an investigation, examining both homicide and suicide angles.

The deceased have been identified as Vijay Sahani and his wife Anjali Sahani, who had been married only four months ago, in March this year.

According to family members, Anjali had been unwell for the past few days and was staying at her maternal home. Vijay had been visiting his in-laws regularly and had arrived there on Sunday as well.

According to the initial account, only Anjali’s mother, Sheila Devi, was present at the house on Sunday evening. She served food to the couple before stepping out briefly. When she returned, she found Anjali and Vijay hanging from dupatta (scarf) nooses in separate rooms.

The incident immediately created panic in the village, and local police were informed. Police reached the spot, conducted a preliminary investigation, and sent both bodies to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) for postmortem examination.

Vijay’s family has alleged foul play and demanded a fair and impartial investigation. They claimed that even if Anjali had died by suicide, Vijay was murdered afterward.

The family has urged the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding both deaths.

Rejecting the allegations, Anjali’s mother, Sheila Devi, said everything had been normal during the day. She explained that her daughter had been staying at her parental home because of illness and that Vijay visited frequently.

She said the family had sold some land to arrange Anjali’s marriage and questioned why they would harm their own daughter and son-in-law. SDPO (West-1) Suchitra Kumari said the police are investigating the case from every possible angle. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has inspected the scene and collected scientific evidence.

Police stated that the exact cause and manner of death will be determined only after the postmortem reports, forensic analysis, and completion of the investigation.

Authorities have not ruled out any possibility, and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected.(Agency)
