Punjab BJP Leader Harjit Singh Grewal Appointed Chairman of National Commission for Minorities

New Delhi, July 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harjit Singh Grewal has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM).

A prominent BJP leader from Rajpura in Punjab, Grewal succeeds former IPS officer and senior BJP leader Iqbal Singh Lalpura, whose tenure as the Commission’s Chairman had ended, leaving the post vacant.

Speaking to the media after his appointment, Grewal said he had recovered from health issues that had kept him away from active politics for some time. He expressed gratitude to the party leadership for reposing confidence in him and said he would discharge the responsibility entrusted to him with dedication.

Grewal had remained politically inactive in recent months owing to health-related reasons.

Grewal will serve as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities for a term of three years. During this period, he will head the statutory body responsible for safeguarding the rights and interests of notified minority communities and advising the Central Government on matters concerning minority welfare and protection.

He came into national prominence during the farmers’ agitation against the three Central farm laws, when he frequently represented the BJP on television debates and other media platforms. As one of the party’s prominent spokespersons from Punjab, he strongly defended the Union Government’s position on the farm legislation.

His stand during the agitation drew sharp criticism from opposition parties and several farmer organisations, which opposed the farm laws. The three legislations were subsequently repealed by the Central Government after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced their withdrawal.

The National Commission for Minorities is a statutory body responsible for safeguarding the rights and interests of notified minority communities and advising the Central Government on issues relating to minority welfare and protection.
