Legal Cell Expresses Profound Gratitude to CM Bhagwant Singh Mann for Fulfilling a Long-Standing Demand of the State’s Advocates.
The Legal Cell of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab wholeheartedly welcomes the landmark decision by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) in the Tariff Order for FY 2026-27, which reclassifies electricity connections for lawyers’ chambers from the Non-Residential Supply (NRS) category to the Domestic Supply (DS) category.
Speaking on this development, the spokesperson for the AAP Punjab Legal Cell stated that this decision is a testament to the pro-people and visionary leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. By recognizing that a lawyer’s chamber is an “intellectual workspace” dedicated to the administration of justice rather than a commercial “shop,” the Punjab government has restored the dignity of the noble legal profession.
Key Highlights of the Decision:
Significant Savings: Electricity connections for chambers registered with the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana and situated in Court Complexes across Punjab will now be billed at domestic rates.
Justice for “Officers of the Court”: The Commission has rightly acknowledged that advocates perform a public duty and provide essential legal aid, as envisioned under Article 39A of the Constitution.
Revenue Impact: While this move results in a revenue reduction of approximately ₹3.59 Crore per annum for PSPCL, the government has prioritized public interest and the welfare of legal practitioners over profit.
Effective Date: The new tariff rates will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
A Message of Thanks
The Legal Cell extends its heartfelt thanks to CM Bhagwant Singh Mann for his personal intervention and constant support in ensuring that the concerns of the legal community were presented effectively before the Commission.
“Under the AAP government, every section of society—from farmers and laborers to professionals like lawyers—is seeing their long-pending demands met. This reduction in overhead costs for lawyers will ultimately make legal services more affordable for the common man in Punjab.”
The Legal Cell also congratulates the entire legal fraternity of Punjab for this historic win, noting that this reclassification is a unique recognition of the specific role lawyers play in the judicial machinery.Advocate Gian singh Mungo President AAP Legal Wing Punjab,Advocate Gurbhej singh , state secretary APP legal wing,Manvir singh tiwana President dist bar association patialaHarjinder singh , secretary bar association nabha.
