Senior Chartered Accountant, author and thinker CA R.S. Kalra has said that an individual’s future is determined not by circumstances but by the quality of his or her thinking, asserting that lasting success begins with inner transformation rather than external achievements.
Sharing his views during an informal interaction, Kalra observed that modern-day professionals are working harder than ever before, often putting in 10 to 12 hours a day while sincerely fulfilling their responsibilities and striving for success. Despite these efforts, many continue to feel that they are standing still, with increasing hard work often accompanied by a growing sense of emptiness.
Kalra said people generally associate strength with wealth, authority, fame or position, whereas real strength resides within the individual. He maintained that material success alone cannot bring lasting happiness if the mind remains weak, while a strong and disciplined mindset can help people achieve extraordinary success even with limited resources.
He further said that most of life’s problems arise not from external circumstances but from one’s own mindset. According to him, people often blame situations, destiny or others for their failures, overlooking the fact that their external life is largely a reflection of their inner thoughts.
“If we wish to change our lives, we must first change the way we think,” he said.
Describing the human mind as a fertile field, Kalra said it must be cultivated with positive thoughts, discipline, self-confidence and optimism. Otherwise, fear, doubt, jealousy and negativity take root on their own. He stressed that caring for one’s mental well-being is just as important as managing financial stability.
Kalra also emphasised that true power does not lie in controlling others but in mastering one’s own mind and emotions. He said those who remain calm, balanced and patient even during difficult times are ultimately the ones who emerge victorious in life’s biggest battles.
Highlighting another challenge of modern life, he said today’s biggest problem is a scattered mind. People often try to pursue too many goals simultaneously, whereas real success comes to those who channel their energy towards a single, well-defined purpose.
“When the goal is clear, the destination comes closer,” he remarked.
Kalra added that hardships and struggles are not meant to break individuals but to make them stronger, wiser and more mature. Those who treat their difficulties as teachers, he said, eventually find success.
Concluding the interaction, CA R.S. Kalra said every new day offers a choice — either to become a victim of circumstances or to become the master of one’s thoughts and shape one’s own destiny.
“Destiny does not change by chance. It is built through disciplined thinking, strong character, a positive outlook and continuous self-improvement. When the mind changes, the direction of life changes automatically,” he said.
