Strong Opposition: A Necessity for Democracy – by TS Chawla

24 Jan , 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

Our democracy is the largest in the world, and the problem with the opposition is that it consists of multiple parties representing different sections of the total population of the country.

The opposition is the only force that acts as a corrective energy for any incorrect decision of the ruling force. It is only if the opposition agrees on every misdeed eye to eye.

Since the rule of the NDA headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2014 till now, some anti-people decisions have been taken, like demonetization and GST, which invited demonstrations and chaotic conditions in the country. In the process, several poor people died while standing in the queues for the exchange of currency.

The entire opposition participated and issued threatening statements, but Modi came out of all this and was comfortable in the Parliament with a two-thirds majority vote. Here is appreciation for Modi, who managed a majority in the Parliament so prudently and that too in both terms; it was not expected by any opposition party, nor Congress, which ruled the nation for 50 years.

Despite anti-people doings, Modi won, and the opposition failed miserably as the PM was a ruler with all the power and investigating agencies under his control.

During such a span, the opposition united and vowed to pull down Modi but could not have one united voice. They gathered and scattered, and this atmosphere continued, but now they have determinedly decided to fight the 2024 elections as one force under the label INDIA alliance, comprising 28 parties.

Presently, meetings of opposition groups are going on for seat-sharing arrangements, and every party is ambitious to get more and more seats; so far, there is no sign of sacrifice on the part of any party for the sake of complete success.

Earlier, there was a problem in choosing the face for Prime Ministership, and in the last meeting of the opposition alliance, Mamata Banerjee named Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President, as the face. For so many days, there was a noise of confusion, and ultimately, Kharge cleared that first, they must defeat Modi, and if done, then they will decide about it.

A few days back, Kharge has been made the chairperson of the INDIA bloc. Now, with only two months left for elections to take place, Modi has started inaugurating or announcing heavily funded new projects in the country to make a comeback, and his Home Minister Amit Shah promises more than 400 seats in the Parliament.

The INDIA bloc is determined to fight the elections in a united way as the Godi media and BJP campaigning teams are spreading rumors against the breakage of the alliance. They are giving the impression to the public that INDIA cannot give a united fight, and the more the BJP is on such a mission, the more strength the INDIA alliance is accumulating.

The main forces of the INDIA alliance – Congress, JDU, RJD, TMC, AAP, and SP – are busy in seat-sharing tasks among the parties to reach the oneness of the total program, and all angles and aspects are being viewed deeply.

Meetings between Congress and Shiv Sena are going on to settle the seat sharing, and this is to make clear that only a small difference of one or two seats is to be adjusted by the parties to reach finality.

Each seat matters a lot; regional parties can’t afford to lose at this critical juncture, especially when they are to combat the formidable BJP, as their loss means BJP’s gain.

For PM, the poor, Kisan, women, and youths are his top priority. The way central agencies are hounding the opposition, is if a candidate has got the ticket, but when by central agencies, his resources are confiscated. Only arithmetic cannot win the elections, but INDIA has to create its aura and narrative to counter Modi’s aura.

Recent political developments make it clear that Modi ji never gives space to any of its allies. Kharge, Congress President; Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of Congress; and Sharad Pawar, Chairperson of NCP, are actively using their influence and intelligence to unlock the tense knot; there is every possibility that within a week, things will be acceptable to all.

There is no doubt that Arvind Kejriwal is a big horror for Modi; Kejriwal knows well where and which cards are to be played to give a thrashing to the BJP as he has already given his show of miracles in Delhi, suppressing the entire brigade of Modi.

New emerging forces like AAP and SP demand a portion of the areas where other parties enjoy better influence, but conclusively the whole problem is solvable, and there is a need for little sacrifice to achieve success. So, all the alliance parties are paving a clear route to tread to beat Modi.

There is no doubt that Modi is a super politician after winning three important states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh; his paraphernalia is much louder in activities. Modi has gained more upbeat after winning the recent assembly polls in the three states, and the alliance too is engaged to put up a tough fight.

Modi has given this duty of campaigning to BJP President JP Nadda, who has done his arithmetic to have a sweep like in 2019. The NDA fielded 436 candidates in the country, and it won 303 and lost 133 seats, but now BJP is planning to cover politically barren areas also as they have already done their homework.

Now, the intensity of the confrontations between Modi and INDIA alliance seems to be strong. But one may be having wishful thinking, but cannot surpass all the dust particles on the way, but if with all the togetherness election results come in favor of the alliance, there is every possibility of having a good lasting time.

It is well assessed that BJP’s result-oriented area is middle-India where states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana exist; South is a completely anti-Modi area, and on the other hand, INDIA has sharpened its activities.

In the areas where Modi is having his boosting influence, if the alliance goes through success in the seat-sharing workout, then it is easy for it to reap better dividends.

INDIA Alliance is also in the field with a massive program of beating Modi; Congress Ex-President Rahul Gandhi has started his second Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which will cover 6,700 km and mostly areas where Modi’s influence is existing. It will be of nearly two-month duration and will end on March 20, 2024.

INDIA alliance has very strong persons like Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Nitish Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, Lalu Prasad, etc.; if the alliance works in unity,
