Shivraj Chauhan made a cheap and highly condemnable mockery of Punjab Flood Victims: Dhaliwal

Amritsar/Ajnala, September 6, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

MLA from Ajnala constituency and former Cabinet Minister of Punjab, S. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, who has emerged as a hero of his mission “As much as I am capable – I am for the people” by standing with the flood victims of the Ravi River disaster, distributing relief material day and night with the help of government and non-government organizations, said that the BJP and the Central Government, instead of supporting the victims of these devastating floods in their hour of grief, have indulged in Punjab and Punjabiat–opposing policies.

He said the Punjab BJP, which has effectively become a ‘Siyapa Party’ due to its anti-Punjab stance, has stooped to cheap and highly condemnable mockery, provoked by its narrow political interests and misleading propaganda.

He said that the proof of this was evident when Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Chauhan, after visiting the flood-affected areas of Ajnala and witnessing first-hand the destruction caused by the floods – including loss of crops, human lives, and property – compared the tragedy to a “deluge.”

Yet, upon returning to Delhi, he announced no immediate financial relief package for Punjab’s flood victims. Instead, he blamed the Punjab Government with false, baseless, and unfounded allegations of illegal sand mining and distanced himself from providing relief.

Dhaliwal clarified that in Ajnala, through which the international Ravi River flows (touching the Indo-Pak border), the BSF and Army have imposed a complete ban on sand and soil excavation in a 5 km area for security reasons. Therefore, if any illegal mining was happening, the BJP-led Central Government itself is directly responsible since the central security forces function under it.

He further said that even Chauhan himself had admitted in his statement that the weakening embankments of Punjab’s rivers had once been repaired between 1999 and 2004 during the tenure of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s BJP Government.

But instead of admitting its own negligence, the present BJP-led Central Government is, as the saying goes, “the thief scolding the constable,” falsely blaming the Punjab Government for the devastation.

Dhaliwal said that for the past 7 months, Punjab Government officials have been repeatedly knocking on the doors of the Central Government in Delhi to get approval for funds for flood-prevention measures, but the Centre has remained unmoved.

He revealed that Punjab had requested a special package of ₹40 crore to protect BSF posts near the Ravi River in Ajnala from floods. In fact, on July 2, during a meeting with Union Water Resources Minister R. C. Patil in Delhi, an assurance was given that this package would be released soon. But even that was not issued.

He said that had this package been approved, the BSF posts could have been saved from the fury of floods.

Dhaliwal further pointed out that during his recent visit to Ajnala, Union Minister Chauhan was handed a memorandum in the presence of Punjab Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, demanding a special financial package of ₹2,000 crore for the rehabilitation of flood victims, along with the release of ₹60,000 crore of pending central funds due to Punjab.

Similarly, a few days earlier, Punjab Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria was also given a memorandum demanding a ₹2,000 crore relief package. However, it is a matter of grave concern that not even a single rupee has been released as relief so far.

He warned that for the deaths of livestock and people caused by diseases spreading due to floodwaters, the Central Government would be held directly responsible.
