SGPC Chief writes letter to Rajoana urging him to withdraw decision to go on hunger strike

Amritsar, December 4, 2023 (Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami has written a letter to Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is facing death sentence at Central Jail Patiala and has appealed to him to withdraw his decision to start a hunger strike from December 5, 2023.

The SGPC President has written this letter to Bhai Rajoana in light of the decision of the Sikh body’s executive committee and the suggestions received in the recent meeting of Panthic representatives. In this letter, Bhai Rajoana has been appealed to withdraw his decision to go on hunger strike, as it is not right as per the Gurmat (teachings of Sikh Gurus) philosophy.

In the letter, Harjinder Singh Dhami informed Bhai Rajoana about the decision of the SGPC executive and said that the constitutional review petition filed by the SGPC in his case to the President of India was based on Panthic sentiments, which should not be withdrawn. The SGPC President while addressing Bhai Rajoana said that he is a Qaumi Parwana (community figure) and the community can never forget the sacrifice he has made with determination and bravery at the time when the community faced crisis.

He said that during the dark period, the head of the Sikh community was raised with pride due to Bhai Rajoana’s firm response to the atrocities being committed against the Punjab especially the Sikhs, and to the actions of suppressing the community’s rights. He said that Bhai Rajoana has great respect in the Sikh community and continuous efforts are being made in his case by the SGPC and the entire community.

Harjinder Singh Dhami wrote to Bhai Rajoana in the letter that in his case, the SGPC has also decided to hold a Panthic protest from Gurdwara Sri Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi to Rashtrapati Bhawan on December 20, 2023.

He said that representatives of five Takhts, Sant Samaj, Nihang Singh organizations, Damdami Taksal, Kar Sewa leaders, all farm unions, Nirmala and Udasin Sampradas, and political Sikh organizations and representatives of Singh Sabhas are being requested to join this protest. He appealed to Bhai Rajoana not to take any action like a hunger strike considering the community’s sentiments.
