Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of colluding to undermine the mandate of the people of Punjab. He warned that what the BJP could not achieve directly in Punjab, it has managed to accomplish through its “B-team,” AAP. He termed this a betrayal of Punjab.
Randhawa said that the people of Punjab need to understand such political maneuvers and remain vigilant. He emphasized that the real strength of Punjab lies in the awareness of its people and that no party should be allowed to establish its influence through the backdoor. He added that this shift did not occur through a direct public mandate but through an indirect and well-planned political strategy.
He alleged that the defection of six AAP Rajya Sabha members to the BJP was carried out as part of a calculated conspiracy. He claimed that since the BJP secured only 6.6% of the vote in 2022, it knew it could not directly impose its ideology in Punjab. Therefore, through coordination with AAP, six members were made to join the BJP. As a result, he claimed, the BJP now holds 85.7% representation from Punjab in the Rajya Sabha. He described this as a serious concern for democratic values and a major betrayal of the people’s mandate.
Randhawa further stated that Punjab’s interests are being sidelined in favor of central politics. He pointed out that separatist forces often claim that their people are not heard and do not receive justice, and alleged that the BJP has now acted in a way that reinforces such narratives.
He said Punjab has always strongly defended its democratic values, farmers’ rights, and political self-respect. The people of Punjab have consistently remained aware and stood against injustice. He appealed to Punjabis to unite and stand up for their rights and principles to safeguard democracy and prevent the BJP’s ideology from dominating Punjab.
