Two students from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have been awarded the prestigious Manihar Postgraduate Thesis Award for 2023 by the Maize Technologists Association of India.
The awards were presented during the National Conference on “Maize: A Crop for Food, Feed, Nutritional and Bioenergy Security with Environmental Sustainability,” jointly organized by ICAR-IIMR Ludhiana and PAU from August 23 to 25.
Dr. Wajhat-Un-Nisa, a Ph.D. scholar from the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, received the award for her doctoral research on “Genome-Wide Association Studies and Genomic Prediction for Maydis Leaf Blight Resistance in Tropical Maize.” Another student, Ms. Heena Sharma, also from the same department, was recognized with the award in the M.Sc. category for her thesis titled “Deciphering Methionine Content Variability in Maize and Generation of Hybrids.”
Both students conducted their research under the guidance of Dr Surinder K. Sandhu, Principal Maize Breeder and Incharge of the Maize Section. Their work has been published in reputed journals such as BMC Genomics and Cereal Chemistry.
Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice Chancellor, PAU; Dr. M.S. Gill, Dean of Postgraduate Studies; Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research; and Dr. V.S. Sohu, Head of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, extended their heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Wajhat-Un-Nisa, Ms. Heena Sharma, and their advisor Dr. Sandhu for this significant achievement, wishing them continued success in their future endeavors.
