Mayawati reinstates nephew Akash Anand as BSP’s National Coordinator, political heir

Akash-Anand-and-Mayawati

Lucknow, June 23, 2024
After removing him from the key post over a month ago, BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday, reinstated her nephew Akash Anand to the post of the party’s National Coordinator and named him her political successor once again.

Mayawati had axed Akash Anand in the midst of the Lok Sabha election campaign and sated that her decision would stand “till he becomes mature.”

However, in a U-turn on Saturday, Mayawati named him as one of the star campaigners for the forthcoming Uttarakhand Assembly bye-elections.

The decision by Mayawati to remove Akash Anand was taken after he drew flak over his aggressive language while campaigning.

An FIR was lodged against him in Sitapur when he called the Union government a government of terrorists.

“This government is a bulldozer government and a government of traitors. The party that leaves its youth hungry and enslaves its elderly is a terrorist government. Taliban runs such a government in Afghanistan,” he had said during an election rally in Sitapur.

Besides Anand, BSP candidates Mahendra Yadav, Shyam Awasthi, and Akshay Kalra and rally organiser Vikas Rajvanshi were booked in the matter by the Sitapur Police.

The BSP supremo had called a meeting on Sunday to review the party’s defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The meeting, held at the BSP’s office, mainly focussed on why the party could not win even a single seat in the General Elections in the country.

A discussion was also held on how things can improve in the forthcoming 2027 Assembly elections.

It was at this meeting that Mayawati announced her decision to bring back Akash Anand.

It is noteworthy that party cadres had been rooting for Akash Anand after the BSP’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls.(Agency)

Urinary incontinence may affect your skin and kidneys, say doctors

Human-Kidney

New Delhi, June 23 2024-

Urinary incontinence — the involuntary loss of bladder control — can also have a significant effect on your skin and kidneys, said doctors on Sunday.

World Urinary Continence Week is observed between June 17-23 to raise awareness of bladder and bowel problems.

Urinary incontinence causes involuntary loss of bladder control, leading to the accidental leakage of urine. It is a common condition that can range from occasional minor leaks to more frequent and severe issues.

“The combination of hormones and stretched muscles means the muscles that control your bladder are weakened. This can lead to an accidental leak of urine,” Dr Ashwin Mallya, Consultant, Urologist, and Robotic, Uro Onco Surgeon, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told IANS.

“Urinary incontinence doesn’t just affect the bladder but it can lead to skin issues like rashes and infections due to constant moisture. Additionally, it can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs), and in severe cases, it may lead to kidney damage,” he added.

The doctor said that it can also lead to mental health problems like “anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Many people may start avoiding social activities or situations where they fear embarrassment, which can lead to social isolation and a reduced quality of life”.

The condition can affect individuals of all ages but is more prevalent among older adults, especially women during pregnancy and childbirth.

If it continues for long in women after childbirth and without childbirth is the point of concern that needs to be treated, the health expert said.

Dr Arif Akhtar, Senior Consultant – Urology, Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram told IANS that bladder control declines due to age-related changes such as weakening pelvic floor muscles and excessive or insufficient bladder muscle activity, leading to the condition.

“Stress incontinence can result from pelvic muscle stretches and increased bladder pressure during pregnancy and childbirth. Reduced urethral closure pressure and urogenital shrinkage are the outcomes of menopause-induced oestrogen reduction. Overflow incontinence in males is a result of both benign prostatic hyperplasia and problems following a prostatectomy”.

Studies show that up to 45 per cent of women and 15 per cent of men in India suffer from some form of urinary incontinence. This disparity is largely due to differences in anatomy, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, which are unique risk factors for women.

“Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT) with Kegel exercises and therapies to strengthen pelvic muscles are just a few of the many strategies used to prevent urinary incontinence,” Dr Arif told IANS.

Other approaches involve adopting a healthy lifestyle, by maintaining a healthy weight as it reduces pressure on the bladder, staying active by doing regular exercise to strengthen pelvic floor muscles; limiting caffeine and alcohol as these can irritate the bladder; quitting smoking because smoking can lead to coughing, which exacerbates stress incontinence, the doctors said. SC to hear on Monday HSSC’s plea against striking down of 5 pc additional marks

Delhi Supreme Court

New Delhi, June 23, 2024
The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a batch of pleas filed by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission against the decision of the Punjab & Haryana High Court striking down the award of 5 per cent additional marks in the Common Eligibility Test (CET) under the garb of socio-economic criteria.

As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a vacation bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal will take up the matter for hearing on June 24.

Last week, the top court acceded to adjourn the hearing after the petitioner’s counsel submitted that two similar pleas were pending before the apex court against the May 31 decision of the high court.

In its decision, the Punjab & Haryana High Court said that once reservations have already been provided statutorily under the EWS category, as well as on account of social backwardness by providing reservation for Backward Class, further granting benefits under socio-economic criteria would lead to breach of 50 per cent ceiling limit imposed by the Supreme Court and recognised by the Constitution framers.

It added that the socio-economic criteria introduced by the Human Resources Department of the Haryana Government was clearly an act of arbitrariness and discrimination created by similarly situated persons and no person ought to be given benefits.

The writ petitions filed before the Punjab & Haryana High Court contended that the grant of 5 per cent bonus marks provided on different accounts was wholly violative of Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the Constitution of India and created an artificial classification amongst equals on the basis of residence, family, income, place of birth and the status in the society.

It added that before laying down the socio-economic criteria, neither quantifiable data was collected nor any extensive study was conducted.(Agency)

Akhilesh Yadav to focus on non-Yadav OBCs for 2027 polls

Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow, June 23, 2024
Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav will make a conscious attempt to consolidate his votes among non-Yadav OBCs as part of his strategy for the 2027 UP assembly elections.

The Samajwadi Party had fielded five family members from the Yadav family – Akhilesh from Kannauj, Dimple Yadav from Mainpuri, Dharmendra Yadav from Azamgarh, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad and Aditya Yadav from Budaun. All the five candidates won the Lok Sabha elections.

“Akhilesh did not field any other Yadav candidate because he wanted to remove the tag of SP being a pro-Yadav party. He gave tickets to other OBCs and the move paid rich dividends with the party winning 37 seats. He wants to continue with the strategy,” said a senior party spokesman.

It is this strategy that is preventing Akhilesh Yadav from naming his uncle Shivpal Yadav as the Leader of the Opposition in his place. Shivpal is among the senior most MLAs and enjoys acceptability in the party ranks.

The SP does not have a Muslim face who can replace Akhilesh as Leader of the Opposition since Mohd Azam Khan is still in jail. The party has 32 Muslim MLAs but most of them lack the experience needed to work as the Leader of the Opposition.

Party sources said that Akhilesh Yadav had already started working on candidate selection for the assembly polls and would be giving greater representation to Dalits since the party had benefitted from Dalit support in the recently concluded elections.

The party’s biggest gamble paid off in Ayodhya (Faizabad) where it had fielded a Dalit leader Avadhesh Prasad who won the seat, defeating the BJP.

SP’s ticketing strategy is significantly being credited for leading the INDIA bloc to a stunning victory.

The party virtually swept the seats in Purvanchal where both non-Yadav OBCs and Dalits make a significant chunk of the electorate. SP also won seven reserved seats.

With Dalits also now ruling out the BSP as an option, a large segment of the community rallied behind the INDIA bloc. “Why should we waste our vote?” was the refrain among a lot of Dalits on the ground when asked about whether they would prefer the BSP.

The result was that the BSP’s vote share was reduced to a dismal two per cent and the INDIA bloc seems to have gained considerably from the fall.(Agency)

Pakistan assistant coach Azhar Mahmood to pursue legal action over false accusations

New Delhi, June 23 2024-

Following speculation going viral on social media which suggested that the families of players and the team’s coaching staff traveled with the team on Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) expenditure, assistant coach Azhar Mahmood has released a statement stating he will be “pursuing legal advice against those responsible for making these false allegations”.

“This culture of falsely accusing and misleading people to believe a false narrative is now getting ridiculous and dangerous. Speaking without evidence and misconstruing facts is a criminal offence, and those engaging in such behaviour will be dealt with through legal action,” wrote Azhar Mahmood on X formerly known as Twitter.

The men in green had a lackluster T20 World Cup which saw the side crash out of the group stage of the tournament as they were pipped by hosts USA in the points table. This is just one of many controversies brewing around the Pakistan side who are under the microscope after their World Cup group stage exit.

“Pursuing an increase in followers and media attention by spreading falsehoods is downright unacceptable. I will be pursuing legal advice against those responsible for making these false allegations towards me and my family, and strict action will be taken accordingly. We will not be discussing this matter further on social media. I urge everyone to avoid engaging with or entertaining these harmful narratives as it is essential to put an end to such behavior in our media culture,” he concluded.

This follows just days after Pakistan media reported that captain Babar Azam will also take legal action against former cricketers and YouTubers who have accused the number one ranked ODI batsman in the world of misconduct during the course of the tournament. (Agency)

Yo-Yo-Honey-Singh

Mumbai, June 23,2024
Rapper, singer, and music producer Yo Yo Honey Singh has arrived in Mumbai for the wedding of his best friend, Sonakshi Sinha, and promised to dance without drinking (“bina daaru piye nachunga mai aaj”).

We can see Honey Singh in a video as he arrives in style at the Mumbai airport. He’s seen wearing a brown-patterned half-sleeve shirt and matching shorts. He sports a salt-and-pepper look, clear sunglasses and black slippers.

Talking to paparazzi, Honey, seen heading towards his car, expressed his excitement for Sonakshi and Zaheer Iqbal’s wedding, and said: “It’s a big celebration tonight. I am here for the biggest celebration — Sonakshi and Zaheer. I am here for the biggest celebration ever.”

The video then shows the singer, known for tracks like ‘Brown Rang’, ‘Angreji Beat’, and ‘Dope Shope’, clicking pictures with fans at the airport. He is also seen posing with children at the arrival lounge.

Later in the video, we can see Honey saying, “Let’s go… bina daaru piye nachunga mai aaj … Har Har Mahadev (I will dance tonight without drinking).”

Earlier, Yo Yo Honey Singh had shared a message for the soon-to-be-wed couple on his Instagram Stories, saying that although he will be busy with the shoot of his upcoming EP ‘Glory’ in London, he would attend Sonakshi’s wedding.

The rapper described Sonakshi as his best friend and shared how she helped him immensely in his career.

He wrote: “Tho’ I gonna be in London shooting Glory’s first song. But I will make sure I will attend my best friend’s Sonakshi’s wedding. As she has been a big support in my career and helped me so many times in life. Best wishes to the power couple, Sona and Zaheer! Bholenath, bless them.”

For the unversed, Sonakshi and Honey have starred together in the Punjabi hip-hop track ‘Kalaastar’.

Sonakshi and Zaheer, the man she lovingly describes as her ‘personal psycho’, have been dating for the past seven years. Salman Khan, a friend of Zaheer’s family who gave Sonakshi her Bollywood break in the action-comedy ‘Dabbang’ (2010), played Cupid.

Zaheer, too, made his debut with ‘Notebook’, a Salman Khan film where he was cast opposite another newbie, Pranutan Bahl, the daughter of actor Mohnish Bahl and granddaughter of Nutan.

It is said that Salman introduced Sonakshi to Zaheer on the sets of ‘Notebook’ in 2017. Zaheer’s father, Iqbal Ratansi, who has well-established jewellery and real estate businesses, is a childhood friend of Salman Khan.

Sonakshi, now better-known for playing Faridan Bai, the main antagonist in ‘Heeramandi’, and Zaheer have starred together in the critically panned 2022 film ‘Double XL’, where he plays a London-based TV line producer, Zorawar Rahmani.

The ‘Heeramandi’ star’s next film is the horror comedy ‘Kakuda’, which also features Riteish Deshmukh and Saqib Saleem in the lead roles.(Agency)

ISRO aces final test of Reusable Launch Vehicle tech for Landing Experiment

New Delhi, June 23 2024-

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday announced success in the final test of the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) Landing EXperiment (LEX).

This is the third consecutive success in the series of LEX (03) technology demonstrating “the autonomous landing capability” and was conducted at 07:10 a.m. at the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in Chitradurga, Karnataka.

But, the RLV LEX-03 mission achieved success “under more challenging release conditions (cross range of 500 m against 150 m for LEX-02) and more severe wind conditions,” ISRO said in a statement.

As part of the experiment, the winged vehicle, named ‘Pushpak’, was released from an Indian Air Force Chinook Helicopter at an altitude of 4.5 km.

Armed with advanced autonomous capabilities, “Pushpak executed a precise horizontal landing under challenging conditions,” ISRO said.

The space agency added that “from a release point 4.5 km away from the runway, Pushpak autonomously executed cross-range correction manoeuvres, approached the runway, and performed a precise horizontal landing at the runway centreline”.

“Due to this vehicle’s low lift-to-drag ratio aerodynamic configuration, the landing velocity exceeded 320 kmph, compared to 260 kmph for a commercial aircraft and 280 kmph for a typical fighter aircraft”.

ISRO stated that post-touchdown, brake parachutes were used to reduce the vehicle velocity to nearly 100 kmph. Then landing gear brakes were used to decelerate and stop the vehicle on the runway.

The RLV-LEX mission, which uses multisensor fusion including sensors like an inertial sensor, radar altimeter, flush air data system, pseudo lite system, and NavIC, “simulated the approach and landing interface and high-speed landing conditions for a vehicle returning from space”.

ISRO noted that the winged body and flight systems were reused without any modification from the LEX-02 mission, demonstrating the robustness of ISRO’s capability of design to reuse flight systems for multiple missions.

Further, the success validates “the advanced guidance algorithm catering to longitudinal and lateral plane error corrections — essential for the future Orbital Reentry Mission”.

ISRO now aims to “embark into RLV-ORV, the orbital reusable vehicle,” the agency said. (Agency)
