T20 World Cup: ‘Putting pressure on opposition matters in T20s’, says Rohit

rohit-sharma

North Sound (Antigua), June 23 2024-

After securing a 50-run win over Bangladesh in their second Super Eight game of 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, India skipper Rohit Sharma said his side’s batting approach of going hard from the word go and putting pressure on the opposition is what matters the most now.

On a fresh pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, India dominated from the word go with immaculate ease, as every batter looked to attack, resulting in four batters having strike-rate above 150, as they posted a commanding 196/5.

Vice-captain Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 27-ball fifty was laced with four fours and three sixes, which was key in India amassing 62 runs off the last five overs. Virat Kohli made a solid 37, while Rishabh Pant smashed an entertaining 36 and Shivam Dube overcame his struggles to hit 34, with Rohit himself making a quick 23.

The attacking strategy worked well as India also posted the highest T20I score at the venue. They also hit 13 sixes – the most number of maximums they have hit in a T20 World Cup game, as Bangladesh struggled to contain them for prolonged periods in the match.

“Look, all eight batters need to play their role, whatever it is. We saw only one guy get a fifty, but we still got 198 (196). In T20s, I don’t believe you need to get fifties and hundreds. How you can put pressure on the opposition is what matters.”

“All the batters were trying to do that from the word go. That’s how we want to play and encourage ourselves to go forward. Yes, you need to understand the conditions as well, but we have a lot of experience in the squad, and we back them to use that experience on the field,” said Rohit after the match ended.

For India to secure their qualification for the semi-finals, they simply need to beat Australia at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on Monday or avoid a huge defeat to save their net run rate from suffering a big dent.

“I’ve been talking about that for a long time. It’s just about going there and putting it to work knowing what is expected out of us, what we need to do and how we need to play. Considering everything, we played really well.”

“We adapted to the conditions. There are factors (like the wind) you need to take into account and be smart on how to choose those options. We were smart with the bat, and with the ball. Overall it was a great effort,” added Rohit.

He also spoke about how Pandya’s vintage knock and his 53-run stand with Dube helped India get out of a troubled phase against Bangladesh. “I mentioned in the last game that his partnership with Surya (was crucial against Afghanistan). Him batting well the way he did puts us in a very good state.”

“We want to finish off innings really well after the top five-six set the platform to finish the game. Hardik being Hardik, we know what he’s capable of. This was a perfect example of what he can do with the bat. He’s a very important player for us. If he can keep doing that, we will be in good positions,” concluded Rohit. (Agency)

Bajrang Punia again suspended by NADA for anti-doping rule violation: Report

Bajrang-Punia

New Delhi, June 23 2024-

Olympics bronze medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia has received a formal “notice of charge” from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for refusing to provide a urine sample. As a result, a multiple World Championships medallist, has once again been provisionally suspended by NADA, says a report.

Last month, Punia was provisionally suspended after he refused to provide his urine sample to NADA during the selection trials in Sonepat on March 10.

According to the Tribune report, “the latest order was issued by NADA on Thursday and he has been asked to respond to the latest suspension by July 11”.

Following reports of his inital provisional suspension order, the wrestler had clarified that he never “refused to give his sample” and requested NADA officials for a response about the expired kit which they had sent to collect his sample.

Later, Anti Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADAP) revoked the 30-year-old wrestler’s suspension, citing that NADA had not formally charged Bajrang for the anti-doping rule violation that allegedly took place in March this year. (Agency)

After Mehendi, stage set for Sonakshi-Zaheer civil marriage and celebratory party

Mumbai, June 23 2024-

The stage is set for the much-anticipated wedding of Sonakshi Sinha with long-time beau Zaheer Iqbal.

The wedding celebrations officially kicked off with the arrival of producer Ramesh Taurani’s wedding gift for Zaheer — a wine bottle accompanied by flowers.

Ahead of their wedding, Sonakshi and Zaheer hosted a private mehendi ceremony for family and friends. Sonakshi, known as Sona among friends, wore a stunning red and brown outfit, even as Zaheer’s relatives welcomed her into Bandstand Building A, which is how the Iqbal residence is known.

The Sinha family home, Ramayana, was brightly lit up on Saturday evening in anticipation of the wedding.

As officially announced by Zaheer’s father, Iqbal Ratansi, it will be a civil marriage, which will be followed by a celebratory party at the upper-crust Mumbai restaurant, Bastian, on Linking Road, Bandra West.

The restaurant, which is owned by Shilpa Shetty, is now helmed by the formerly New York-based Michelin-starred celebrity chef, Suvir Saran.

Sonakshi and the man she lovingly describes as her “personal psycho”, Zaheer Iqbal, have been dating for the past seven years. It was Salman Khan, a friend of Zaheer’s family and Sonakshi’s ‘Dabangg’ co-star, who played Cupid, according to media reports.

It is said that the couple met when Zaheer was shooting for ‘Notebook’, the 2019 romantic drama produced by Salman Khan. Zaheer was making his debut in the film opposite another newbie, Pranutan Bahl, daughter of actor Mohnish Bahl, and granddaughter of Nutan.

Zaheer, the eldest child of leading Mumbai jeweller Iqbal Ratansi, acted opposite her in the critically panned 2022 film ‘Double XL’, where he plays a London-based TV line producer, Zorawar Rahmani.

The film, which also features Huma Qureshi, sees Sonakshi as fashion designer Sara Kapoor, who relocates to London from Delhi after a broken relationship.

Zaheer was last seen on the big screen in a special appearance with Salman’s brother-in-law Aayush Sharma in the action film, Ruslaan, released earlier this year. Like ‘Double XL’, ‘Ruslaan’ also bombed at the box office. (Agency)

3rd ODI: Priya, Shreyanka come in as SA opt to bat first against India

Bengaluru, June 23 2024-

Top-order batter Priya Punia and off-spin all-rounder Shreyanka Patil come in for India as South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first in the third women’s ODI at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday.

India have a 2-0 unpassable lead in the series and a win for them on Sunday will confirm their clean sweep over South Africa. The Proteas women did run India close in a run-fest second ODI on June 19, but fell short of a victory by four runs in pursuit of chasing 326, where Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Marizanne Kapp and Laura Wolvaardt slammed centuries.

For Sunday’s match, which is still worth ten ICC Women’s Championship points, left-arm seamer Tumi Sekhukhune replaces pacer Masabata Klaas, while Sinalo Jafta remains ruled out due to a mild concussion.

For India, Priya makes a return to the playing eleven after last playing in the format against Bangladesh in 2023, and replaces Dayalan Hemalatha.

On the other hand, hometown favourite Shreyanka replaces leg-spinner Asha Sobhana, with the match to be played on the pitch used for the ODI series opener last week.

India: Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Priya Punia, Harmanpreet Kaur (captain), Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wicketkeeper), Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Radha Yadav, Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil

Under-construction bridge collapses in Bihar’s East Champaran

Patna, June 23 2024-

An under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s East Champaran district in the wee hours of Sunday.

The incident occurred in the Ghorasahan block in the district. The construction of the bridge was underway under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana with a cost of Rs 1.59 crore. The 40-foot-long bridge was built between the Amwa village of Ghorasahan block and the Chainpur railway station.

Locals claimed the concretisation of the bridge was taking place late on Saturday night. As soon as the concretisation was done, it collapsed.

The bridge was built by Motihari’s Dhiraj Construction Private Limited. The foundation stone of the bridge was laid by Rama Devi, former BJP MP of Sheohar, on March 10 this year.

“The bridge is being constructed in two spans. The concretisation of the bridge was done from one side on Saturday. After that, last night dozens of anti-social elements came at the construction site in some vehicles and broke the support of the bridge. Due to this, the bridge collapsed. The administrative officer has been informed about this,” said SN Mandal, Executive Engineer, PWD Dhaka sub-division of East Champaran district.

Meanwhile, the villagers claimed that the material being used in the construction of the bridge was of low quality. The bridge is not being constructed as per the estimate. As a result, it collapsed along with the casting.

“The bridge collapsed due to the irregularities being done in the construction. A high-level investigation is needed here. The engineer is using low-grade materials for the construction of the bridge. This is the reason why the bridge collapsed,” said Deepak Kumar Singh, a villager.

Earlier, a 30-foot-long bridge built on the canal of the Gandak River in Siwan collapsed on Saturday. That bridge was 40-45 years old. People said that the bridge collapsed due to soil cutting during the cleaning of the canal.

Last week, another bridge built with an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore in the Sikti block of Araria collapsed before its inauguration. (Agency)

T20 World Cup: ‘Knew conditions well, tried to vary my pace & length’, says Kuldeep

spinner-Kuldeep-Yadav

North Sound (Antigua), June 23 2024-

After his superb 3-19 played a key role in India’s comprehensive 50-run win over Bangladesh in their second Super Eights game of 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav said he knew conditions well and was focused on varying his pace and length in outclassing batters.

Kuldeep had made his international white-ball debut in the Caribbean in 2017 and after not playing Group A matches in pace-friendly New York, he was brought back for the Super Eights, where he has now taken five wickets across two games.

“I was helping out the team-mates and carrying the drinks (in New York). That is more like playing as a 12th man. I would have loved to bowl there. But it’s more like an Australian sort of wicket.

“But here I made my T20 (and) ODI debut back in 2017. I knew the conditions very well, just the length and trying to vary my pace. So it’s perfect for spinners to come here and bowl,” said Kuldeep in the post-match press conference.

Against Bangladesh, Kuldeep bowled a wonderful spell on a pitch having bounce and bit of grip to trap Tanzid Hasan lbw on the back leg via a stunning googly. He then got a leg-break to turn in slightly to go past a slog-sweeping Towhid Hridoy and trap him lbw. He completed his three-fer by forcing Shakib Al Hasan to mistime a loft to cover.

“It’s very important to play every game, take every game as a normal game. Now obviously we playing at Super Eight, obviously we have a lot of pressure as well. We’re going to play Australia in a couple of days’ time.

“The wickets are good for spinners, as you have seen in the last few games as well. Nothing changes. I’ve got four overs to bowl and that was my plan. Just sticking with the length and varying my pace. For me it’s nice,” added Kuldeep.

He also touched upon that despite the cross breeze challenging his bowling from the Sir Andy Roberts End, it was important for him to nail his lengths and read what the batters might do, instead about thinking how wind can hamper him.

“It was difficult from this end as a spinner because my rhythm is like, not like running rhythm, it’s more like a one step and then aggressive. I didn’t think about the wind, just the length matters. And obviously reading the batter what they are expecting from me, just reading one step ahead, what they are thinking.

“So just keeping this in mind and changing the line and length, and obviously they were targeting the windy side, and just reacting to what they are doing. When the other team needs 10 runs or 12 runs per over and the batter’s going against you my plan is to just stick with the length.

“Obviously when they try to attack you, if you have a proper plan against them and you are bowling in probably the better length, you have maximum chances of getting the batter out. So that is my thinking, not thinking I have to get him out, just the length,” he concluded. (Agency)
