Omar Abdullah Cuts Short Delhi Visit Amid Floods; Statehood Protest to Continue Under Farooq Abdullah

Jammu, July 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday cut short his visit to New Delhi and announced that he would return to Jammu to personally oversee the administration’s response to heavy rains and flash floods that have affected several parts of the Jammu division, particularly Rajouri.

The decision comes amid worsening weather conditions after incessant overnight rainfall triggered flash floods in Rajouri town, inundating low-lying localities and forcing hundreds of residents to move to safer places. Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations as the situation continues to develop.

In a post on X, Abdullah said he had been closely monitoring the situation since early Sunday morning and was in constant touch with local MLAs from the affected region.

Referring to the weather advisory issued by the Meteorological Department, the Chief Minister said the gravity of the situation required his immediate presence in Jammu, where he would personally review relief and rescue efforts on the ground.

Abdullah stressed that safeguarding human lives remained the administration’s foremost priority. He assured that the government would extend all possible assistance to people affected by the heavy rains and flash floods, including those who have suffered damage to their homes and property.

Despite cutting short his Delhi visit, Abdullah confirmed that the National Conference’s protest in the national capital on July 20, demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, will go ahead as scheduled. The demonstration will be led by National Conference President Farooq Abdullah.
