Thousands of women members of the All-India Mahila Congress (AIMC) from various parts of the country gathered at Jantar Mantar , New Delhi as part of the nation-wide campaign demanding immediate implementation of the women reservation law in the Lok Sabha an State assemblies .
The “historic women reservation legislation” to enable greater participation of women in the political process was passed in both houses of the Parliament last year .The Bill making one-third reservations for women in the Lok Sabha and the State .
Mms Alka Lamba, National President, All India Mahila Congress while launching the nation-wide campaign said “ the campaign launched from Jantar Mantar and would reach every State, every district, every city and every village until the demands of half of the country’s population were met and they were given their rights and security.”
Ms. Lamba said the Modi government had passed the women reservation law before the 2024 general elections but kept its implementation pending. The reservation law should be implemented immediately so that women of Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra — where elections were scheduled later this year — could benefit from the legislation.
“The ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ as a historic legislation that would further strengthen women’s empowerment and enhance their participation in the political process. The bill passed with a majority of the total House membership and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting.” Said Ms Alka Lamba , National President, All India Mahila Congress .
“The demand under this political justice and political participation is to implement the 33% women’s reservation. We demand the government do it today, do it now and ensure women their rights. We suggest that the states where assembly elections will be held, the session may discuss and implement this.
Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra are scheduled to hold elections by the end of 2024, so the women of these states can get the benefit,” she said.
“There are three main demands of the movement. “Our second demand is economic justice. Today, women are the victims of rising inflation and rising unemployment. Due to this, many women are becoming victims of domestic violence. The third demand is the right to social justice and security. Atrocities against women, crimes against women are on the rise under the BJP government and the fear of law among criminals is diminishing,” she said.
She said the Mahalakshmi Scheme, which was promised by the Congress in its manifesto, would also guarantee ₹1 lakh cash assistance annually to one woman in every poor family across the country.
Referring to rising crimes against women in the country, she claimed that 20,000 cases of crime against women were reported in Rajasthan in the last 6 months.
Ms. Lamba asserted that the rising crimes against women across the country was a sign that there was no fear of law among the criminals and referred to the incident of two women buried alive in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
The Mahila Congress chief said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal had assured that these issues would be raised in both Houses of Parliament.
