Kataruchak Leads Plantation Drive to Boost Green Cover in Punjab

Chandigarh, July 10, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
In a strong push towards enhancing Punjab’s green footprint, Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak conducted an intensive review of the state’s ongoing plantation efforts during a rapid inspection tour of Ballowal Saunkhri and Fatehpur nurseries in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district.

Calling tree plantation a “crucial pillar for sustaining ecological harmony,” Minister Kataruchak emphasized that increasing forest cover remains a top priority for the state government. He highlighted how diverse varieties of saplings, when nurtured and maintained effectively, can reshape the environmental future of the region.

At Ballowal Saunkhri nursery, the Minister was briefed on the growth and care of indigenous species including Khair, Sheesham, Falahi, Bamboo (Baans), Dekk, Holoptilia, and Dheu. These trees are not only significant ecologically but also contribute to the aesthetic and biodiversity value of the region.

Later, at the Fatehpur nursery, the Minister reviewed plantations of Peepal, Bahera, Bohar, Jacaranda, Mehndi, Neem, Pilkhan, Arjun, and Hibiscus. He personally planted a Peepal sapling, symbolizing the state’s commitment to environmental stewardship, and appreciated the staff for their dedication. Commending their hard work, he announced monetary rewards to motivate and encourage continued excellence in the plantation campaign.

Speaking to officials and locals, the Minister referenced the teachings of Gurbani, noting that environmental care is deeply rooted in Punjab’s spiritual and cultural values. “Preserving nature is a collective duty,” he said, urging citizens to actively participate in the state’s “Clean and Green” mission.

He was accompanied by Dharminder Sharma, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF); Nidhi Srivastava, Chief Conservator of Forests (Hills); and Harbhajan Singh, Divisional Forest Officer, SBS Nagar.

The Forest Department continues to scale up its efforts across districts to restore green spaces, ensure biodiversity conservation, and combat climate change with meaningful grassroots participation.
