Indian Men’s Hockey team members pay obeisance at Harmandar Sahib, SGPC honours team with Rs.1-cr

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today honoured the Hockey India men’s team with Rs 1 crore for winning the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics. SGPG organised a special event for giving this honour to the hockey players in front of the Information Office, who visited to pay obeisance and thank the Guru at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib.

SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur handed over the cheque of Rs 5 lakh to each player along with Siropao (robe of honour), a golden model of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib and a memento. Hockey India team general secretary S. Rajinder Singh and family members of the hockey players were also honoured on this occasion.

Among the eleven players from Hockey India men’s team who visited included captain Manpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, Hardik Singh, Gurjant Singh, Varun Kumar, Mandeep Singh, Shamsher Singh, and Simranjeet Singh.

SGPC President also specially honoured Hockey India women’s team member Gurjeet Kaur and her family members, who also visited here along with the men’s team.

The hockey players first paid obeisance at the holiest Sikh shrine and then attended the felicitation ceremony organised by the SGPC.

Speaking on the occasion, SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur said the history that the Indian Hockey team has created by winning a bronze medal after 41 years has brightened the name of the country across the world. She said that this was the moment of more happiness for Punjab as majority of the players in Indian hockey team are from Punjab.

Bibi Jagir Kaur said that the Sikh Qaum (community) has been introduced to the spirit of sports by the Gurus, and taking guidance from the same, our youths have always made great achievements.

She said that the sports strengthen the societal relations and under the same, the honorary amount is being given to every player of the hockey team by the SGPC. She said that the honour given from the Guru’s house is immense because it was not just an amount but a blessing of the Guru Sahib.

Meanwhile, Bibi Jagir Kaur while referring to the efforts being made by the SGPC for the promotion of sports said that the sports academies of the SGPC are continuously active and the hockey team of the SGPC was in the recent past recognized by Hockey India. She said a sports directorate has also been set-up for various sports.

Bibi Jagir Kaur congratulated the players of the Indian hockey team and hoped that they will win a gold medal in the next Olympics.

Before the function, the hockey players were welcomed amid the resonance of the victory slogan (Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akal) by the SGPC. Young and budding players of SGPC hockey academy were also present on this occasion.

On this occasion, SGPC general secretary S. Bhagwant Singh Sialka also congratulated the hockey players and their family members. The stage was managed by SGPC additional secretary S. Sukhdev Singh Bhurakohna and OSD to SGPC president Dr Amrik Singh Latifpur.

Among those present on this occasion included former Punjab cabinet minister S. Gulzar Singh Ranike, SGPC executive committee member S. Amrik Singh Shahpur, SGPC members S. Manjit Singh Bhurakohna, Bhai Ram Singh, S. Mangwinder Singh Khaparkheri, S. Amarjit Singh Bhalaipur, Amarjit Singh Bandala, Amrik Singh Vichhoa, Bibi Gurinder Kaur, Kuldeep Singh Teda, Akali leaders Yuvraj Bhupinder Singh, Gurpartap Singh Tikka and others.

Hockey India team captain thanks SGPC

Thanking the SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur for honouring the team, Hockey India men’s team captain Manpreet Singh said that the honour received from the Guru’s house is a very big honour.

“With this honour, we have got courage and encouragement to move further. When we won the bronze medal, the entire team had decided that first of all we would pay obeisance at Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib and thank Guru Sahib. Today, with the blessings of the Guru Sahib, we consider ourselves fortunate. The honour given by the SGPC is an honour bestowed on us by the entire community”, said Manpreet Singh.
