Dr. Prabjeet Singh, Deputy Director (Training) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Booh, delivered a Lead Paper at the 2nd Aquatic Science Conference titled “Securing Sustainable Aqua-Food Systems & Resources.”
The conference was organized by the Aquatic Science and Innovative Management Division of the Faculty of Natural Resources at Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai, Thailand.
Dr. Singh had the honor of sharing the stage with eminent shrimp scientists, including Prof. Dr. Toshiaki Itami from Miyazaki University, Japan; Dr. Puthh Songsangjinda, Advisor at the Department of Fisheries, Thailand; Dr. Masaharu Mizukami, Japan; and Dr. Tohru Mekata, among other distinguished international experts.
In his keynote address, titled “Best Management Practices in Shrimp Farming: A Way Forward towards Sustainability,” Dr. Singh emphasized the critical role of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in ensuring sustainable shrimp farming.
He underscored the importance of adhering to these practices to address global disease challenges in shrimp aquaculture. He recommended the Thai scientists to collaborate with Indian counterparts to devise a strategic plan to combat diseases that have previously devastated Thailand’s shrimp production.
Dr. Singh has been instrumental in introducing, demonstrating, and validating shrimp farming technologies in the salt-affected, waterlogged districts of South-western Punjab. His technical guidance has significantly impacted the region, transforming zero-earning lands into productive shrimp farms and contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of debt-ridden rural communities.
His pioneering work has garnered global recognition, leading to frequent invitations to speak at both national and international forums.
Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director of Extension Education, congratulated him on his remarkable achievement, noting that such opportunities pave the way for future research collaborations between universities.
Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor expressed his pride in Dr. Singh’s international representation of the university, state, and country. He remarked, “Dr. Prabjeet Singh’s contributions to shrimp farming in Punjab have been pivotal in utilizing previously barren, salt-affected lands and enhancing the socio-economic status of the region’s farmers.”
