Former Hockey Star Pargat Singh praises Kashmir for enhancing Hockey standards

The Major Dhyan Chand hockey tournament 2024, held at Srinagar’s Polo Ground with Chinar Tigers facing Baramulla Heroes, stood out for its impressive showcase of skill and sportsmanship.

This distinguished event was honored by the presence of Padma Shri awardee, former Indian hockey team captain, and former cabinet minister Punjab and current Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, Sardar Pargat Singh, fostering a true celebration of athletic excellence and camaraderie.

In a captivating battle, Chinar Tigers emerged victorious with a scoreline of 1-0 over Baramulla Heroes, capturing the hearts of spectators. Witnessed by a spirited audience, the competition featured 12 teams representing various districts from across the state, adding to the spirit of healthy competition and community engagement.

As the special guest, Pargat Singh not only cheered on the participants but also extended his commendations to the winning teams, highlighting the significance of dedication and teamwork in the realm of sports. Expressing his admiration for the fervor of Kashmiri youth towards hockey, he envisioned a bright future for the sport, propelled by the passion and commitment of the next generation.

Moreover, Secretary of All India National Champions Trophy, Jb. Raja Ghulam Nabi Wani, extended a heartfelt invitation for the upcoming International Hockey Championship in Kashmir, scheduled for August 2025, promising a platform for players to showcase their talents on a global scale.

The tournament, organized by Headquarter 31 Sub-Area of 15 Corps in Srinagar, in collaboration with J-K Sports Council to commemorate National Sports Day in honor of Major Dhyan Chand, received generous support from Liberty Group, providing hockey shoes and bags to the players.

The event was graced by the presence of notable personalities, including national hockey player Mr. Gurdeep Singh, whose support and encouragement bolstered the success of the championship.

Under the adept leadership and guidance of Lt. Gen Rajiv Ghai and MG. PBS Lamba, the tournament exemplified a harmonious blend of sportsmanship, skill, and community spirit, setting a vibrant stage for the future of hockey in the region. – END –
