Dr. Parveen Chhuneja, a renowned scientist at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has made history by becoming the first woman from the university to be awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
This esteemed recognition celebrates her significant contributions to agricultural biotechnology. Notably, Dr. Chhuneja now holds fellowships from three of India’s premier scientific academies—INSA, the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI)—making her the first scientist at PAU, across all faculties, to achieve this distinction in just three years.
Her groundbreaking work in wheat research has earned her both national and international accolades.
Internationally, she received the “Gene Stewardship Team Award” and the “Jeanie Borlaug Laube Women in Triticum (WIT) Mentor Award” from the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative.
Nationally, she was honored with the “Dr. Darshan Singh Brar Award” in Agriculture and the “Outstanding Woman Scientist Awards” by both the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Society for Wheat and Barley Research. PAU also recognized her contributions by presenting her with the “Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush Distinguished Professor Award” and the Merit and Plaque as the Best Researcher.
PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal and Director of Research Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt congratulated Dr. Chhuneja on her remarkable achievement, bringing immense pride to the university.
