Congress MP Chaudhary dies of heart attack in Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab

Congress MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh on Saturday died of heart attack during party leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab.

Singh fell during the rush of the yatra in Phillaur town and was taken to a hospital in Phagwara in an ambulance where he died.

Rahul Gandhi rushed to the hospital after learning about the demise of 76 year old Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar.

Former Punjab Minister Vijay Inder Singla said the Yatra has been called off for the time being and a fresh announcement about resumption of Yatra would be made by PCC President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

Chaudhary belonged to a family of staunch Congress loyalists. He was the son of a senior Congressman Master Gurbanta Singh. Chaudhary Santokh Singh and his elder brother late Chaudhary Jagjit Singh had served as Cabinet Ministers in the State. His son Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary is a sitting Congress MLA from Phillaur.

In 2019, Singh became the second-time MP from Jalandhar with a margin of 19,491 votes.
