In line to the commitment made by the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to set up 1000 sports nurseries for nurturing players, trials began for the recruitment of 260 Coaches under the first phase at Sports Complex, Sector 78, Mohali, today. The trials will continue till July 16.
Divulging the details, Deputy Director of, the Sports Department, Punjab, Parminder Singh said that as per the directions of Special Chief Secretary Sports, Saravjit Singh and Director Sports Dr SP Anandh Kumar, the sports nurseries are being treated as the flagship program of the Punjab Government, aimed at refining and preparing budding players for state, national and international sports competitions by providing specialized coaching.
The advertisement for the recruitment of coaches in these sports nurseries was given before the Lok Sabha Elections and the state-level trials of those who applied based on that advertisement have been started today in a fully transparent manner at Mohali.
In the first phase, as many as 260 sports nurseries will be made functional, he further added.
The Deputy Director further said that there is no dearth of sports skills in Punjab, but sometimes good players or children who have the potential to become ace sportsmen are deprived of coming forward due to a lack of suitable opportunities or coaches.
Not only do the players suffer, but the state and the country also suffer, he said by adding that the sports nurseries being opened by the Punjab government will prove to be a revolutionary step in the field of sports.
Among the 25 sports disciplines for which trials are being conducted are Tennis, Archery, Kabaddi, Athletics, Kho-Kho, Football, Cycling, Volleyball, Handball, Basketball, Wrestling, Hockey, Boxing, Weightlifting, Judo, Badminton, Cricket, Rowing, wushu, swimming, table tennis, kickboxing, gymnastics and fencing, he added.
The trials District Sports Officer, SAS Nagar, Harpinder Singh said that the main purpose of these sports nurseries is to bring the children to the playgrounds to inculcate sports spirit among them.
Once the child reaches the sports nursery, their sports journey will begin smoothly based on the practice conducted by the experienced coaches available there. Another benefit is that once children start coming to the playgrounds, they will also avoid drugs and Punjab will become a Rangla Punjab again.
On this occasion, Bhagwad Prashad, who came from Patiala to give the trials, said that he had come for the trials/physical test in connection with the recruitment of coaches for the sports nurseries, said that the trial was conducted in a very honest and transparent manner. The behaviour of the trial-taking staff was very good. He also thanked the Punjab government for giving him this opportunity.
Similarly, Manpreet Kaur who came from Sangrur said that she has come here to appear for the trials for the recruitment of coaches and the trials are being conducted in a very transparent manner. A lot of support is being given by the staff.
On this occasion, Assistant Director Ranbir Singh Bhangu, officials and employees of various departments including the sports department, health department, officials and coaches of Punjab, and a large number of candidates with sports backgrounds desirous to become coaches were present.
