Actress Sumi Borah and Husband surrender in 2200-cr Scam

Guwahati, September 12, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

Controversial Assamese actress Sumi Borah and her husband, Tarkik Borah, surrendered to the police on Thursday after being accused in a multi-crore online trading scam. The couple had been on the run since the scam came to light the previous week.

DGP Confirms Arrest on Social Media

Assam’s Director General of Police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the news, stating, “The game is up for them. Compliments to the Team STF.” The Assam Police had formed a Special Task Force (STF) specifically to investigate the online trading fraud.

Couple Surrenders in Dibrugarh

Sumi Borah and Tarkik Borah surrendered in Dibrugarh after remaining in hiding for days.

The duo had fled when it was revealed that Borah had close connections with the alleged kingpin of the Rs 2,200 crore scam, Bishal Phukan.

The scam involved Phukan’s fraudulent online trading scheme, which duped numerous investors with promises of high returns.

Sumi Borah’s Social Media Video

Before their surrender, Sumi Borah circulated a video on social media, claiming that she had not fled but had been in hiding due to false propaganda being spread against her. In the video, Borah stated that her family was suffering as a result of the misinformation and announced her intention to surrender to the authorities.

Borah’s Connection to the Scam

Both Sumi Borah and Bishal Phukan hail from Dibrugarh, Assam. According to sources, Phukan used Borah’s connections in the Assamese film industry to attract clients to his fraudulent trading scheme. She also reportedly influenced high-profile individuals to invest in the scam, offering promises of much higher returns on their investments.

Lavish Wedding Funded by Scam

In 2022, Sumi Borah married photographer Tarkik Borah in an extravagant destination wedding held in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Many prominent figures from the Assamese film industry attended the event, and it is reported that Bishal Phukan spent at least Rs 5 crore on the wedding.

Police Investigation and Search

Following the arrest of Bishal Phukan, police quickly turned their attention to Sumi Borah. Investigators visited her apartment in Guwahati’s Pathar Quarry area, but both Borah and her husband were nowhere to be found. A police officer revealed, “We found Sumi Borah’s luxury car in the basement of the apartment building. However, the couple had fled before the investigation team arrived.”

With their surrender, the police will now move forward with further investigations into the case, which has already caused significant uproar in the state.
