Rapper 50 Cent has revealed that long before he became famous by his iconic stage name, he had a rather unexpected nickname — “Boo Boo”.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, was asked by host Jimmy Fallon whether he preferred to be addressed as 50 Cent or Curtis.
“50’s fine, you know. 50’s fine, yeah,” the rapper replied.
Fallon then asked whether there were any other names being considered when he was starting his career.
“It wouldn’t work well. My first nickname was Boo Boo,” 50 Cent said.
Fallon immediately agreed that the nickname was probably better left in the past.
“No, you don’t want to be Boo Boo,” Fallon joked.
“No, no,” the rapper responded.
50 Cent, born Curtis James Jackson III, rose to international fame after his 2002 mixtape Guess Who’s Back? caught the attention of rapper Eminem, who subsequently signed him to Shady Records.
His career was preceded by a traumatic incident in May 2000, when he was shot nine times. The shooting led to the cancellation of the release of his planned album and his departure from his record label.
His debut studio album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, was released in 2003 to widespread critical and commercial success. The album topped the Billboard 200 and produced the hit singles “In da Club” and “21 Questions”. It also received multiple platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America.
50 Cent has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and has received numerous honours, including a Grammy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, 13 Billboard Music Awards, six World Music Awards, three American Music Awards and four BET Awards.
He also expanded into acting, appearing in films including the semi-autobiographical Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Home of the Brave and Righteous Kill.
In 2003, he launched G-Unit Records, named after the hip-hop group G-Unit that he formed.
