Trump says he would ‘love to run’ for another term in 2028 despite constitutional bar

US President Donald Trump has said he would “love to run” for another presidential term in 2028, while acknowledging that the law poses a major obstacle to such a bid.

“Everybody asks me that question, and you know that the law is very strong on that,” Trump told reporters when asked whether he was seriously considering a third term.

“I’d love to run, but the law is very strong,” he added.

Trump was responding to questions about his repeated references to 2028 in recent weeks, including a “Trump 2028” advertisement shown at a dinner and chants from supporters urging him to seek another term.

“I get asked by everyone,” Trump said, adding that supporters were chanting “2028” at an event.

However, Trump did not indicate that he intended to challenge the constitutional restriction or explain how he could legally seek another term.

The US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment states that no person can be elected president more than twice. Ratified in 1951, the amendment followed Franklin D. Roosevelt’s election to four presidential terms.

Trump was elected president in 2016 and again in 2024.

Repealing or altering the two-term limit would require a constitutional amendment. Such an amendment must be proposed either by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress or through a convention called by two-thirds of state legislatures, followed by ratification by three-fourths of the states.

Trump also spoke about security precautions during his recent trip to Turkey, saying the Secret Service and military determined his travel arrangements.

“It’s only up to Secret Service. I just follow what they like to do,” he said. “So I go by Secret Service and the military.”

Asked why such precautions were necessary, Trump said he faced numerous threats.

“I have a lot of threats that you don’t know about,” he said, adding that consequential presidents face significant security threats.

Trump also addressed tensions with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, claiming that the US was in control of the strategic waterway and praising the US Navy.

“We totally control the Strait of Hormuz. We have control over it. Nobody else, only us,” he said.

Asked whether he trusted Iran, Trump replied: “I don’t trust Iran.”

He began the exchange by highlighting the performance of the US economy, saying the country was doing well and that the stock market was “fantastic”.
