Davis Riley moved into prime position to end a two-year wait for a PGA Tour title after carding a seven-under 63 to seize a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
Riley climbed to 15-under-par with a superb finish, sinking a 54-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole before adding another birdie at the 18th to edge ahead of Michael Brennan. The result has significantly boosted his hopes of qualifying for the FedEx Cup Play-offs, with only the Rocket Classic and next week’s Wyndham Championship remaining before the top 70 players secure postseason berths.
Indian-origin golfers also remained firmly in contention for Play-off qualification. Akshay Bhatia occupied 12th place in the FedEx Cup standings, followed by Aaron Rai in 35th, Sahith Theegala in 42nd and Indo-Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju in 53rd, all currently inside the qualifying positions.
Riley, seeking his third PGA Tour victory and first since the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, has endured an inconsistent season marked by 10 missed cuts, including last week’s 3M Open. He began the week ranked 146th in the FedEx Cup standings and needs a strong finish to revive his season.
Brennan, who posted a 64 featuring seven birdies, narrowly missed sharing the overnight lead after a bogey on the final hole. The 24-year-old former Wake Forest standout entered the tournament ranked 106th in the FedEx Cup standings and is also chasing a Play-off berth.
Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard surged into contention with a brilliant course-record-equalling 61, while Chris Kirk, Rickie Fowler and Cameron Young were three shots off the lead. Xander Schauffele remained within striking distance, another shot further back, setting up an intriguing final-round battle.
With the Play-off race intensifying, Sunday’s final round promises high stakes as players compete not only for the Rocket Classic title but also for valuable FedEx Cup points.
