Punjabi singer and social activist Jasbir Jassi has offered a different perspective on the controversy surrounding the alleged use of abusive language by students during the ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar, suggesting that the problem is rooted in the kind of content young people are exposed to through popular music and OTT platforms.
Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reported remarks expressing concern over the abusive language used by protesting students, Jassi posted a message on X, saying that while children may indeed be using abusive language, they had largely learnt it from songs and OTT content.
Tagging the Prime Minister, Jassi wrote that if asked, he could provide a list of around 1,000 songs containing abusive language. He described the trend not as a “cultural shock” but as a “cultural crime” that should have been stopped long ago but continues unchecked.
In another post on X, Jassi responded to actor Anupam Kher’s appeal for maintaining dignity and civility in public discourse. Tagging Kher, the singer said there was no clear government policy on the use of abusive language in entertainment content.
Jassi claimed that for the past 15 years he had been writing to governments and courts seeking action against songs containing offensive language, but little had changed. He alleged that the widespread use of such content had influenced the language and behaviour of young people.
He further remarked that the situation reflected a form of “karma coming back”, adding that while it was unfortunate, the time had also come to acknowledge the consequences of allowing such content to proliferate unchecked.
Jassi’s comments have added a fresh dimension to the ongoing debate over students’ protests, shifting attention from the conduct of the protesters to the wider cultural environment that, in his view, has contributed to changing patterns of public expression.
