India’s Asmita Dey celebrated the biggest achievement of her career by winning the women’s 48kg judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 and dedicated her triumph to everyone who supported her journey, while expressing gratitude to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for providing her employment in the Uttar Pradesh Police.
After defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach 2-1 in a closely contested final, the judoka said the financial security provided by her police job had helped her support her family and continue pursuing her sporting ambitions.
Speaking after her victory, Asmita said the gold medal belonged to her country, her coaches, parents, relatives and all those who had stood by her. She specifically thanked Yogi Adityanath for appointing her to the Uttar Pradesh Police, saying the opportunity had strengthened her family’s financial position and enabled her to focus on achieving success at the highest level.
Originally from Tripura and now based in Varanasi, Asmita remained composed throughout the final against the experienced Canadian, combining disciplined defence with tactical awareness to secure victory and claim India’s latest Commonwealth Games gold.
She also revealed the physical challenge she faced before the title clash due to the mandatory random weigh-in. Asmita said she had to avoid eating in the morning because her body weight was slightly above the required limit. Only after successfully completing the weigh-in was she able to eat and hydrate before stepping onto the mat for the final.
The Indian judoka enjoyed an impressive campaign in Glasgow, progressing confidently through the earlier rounds before producing another disciplined performance in the gold medal bout.
Her victory further boosted India’s medal tally at the Games and highlighted the growing strength of Indian judo on the international stage. The triumph also marked a significant milestone in Asmita Dey’s career, establishing her among India’s Commonwealth Games champions.
