Punjab Govt’s decision to regulate private school fees is historic: MLA Jeevanjot Kaur

Amritsar, July 14, 2026(Yes Punjab News)

Welcoming the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 issued by the Punjab Government, MLA from Amritsar East, Mrs. Jeevanjot Kaur, termed it a historic and people-friendly decision in the interest of students, parents, and the education system.

Mrs. Jeevanjot Kaur stated that the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Mr. Bhagwant Singh Mann has provided major relief to lakhs of families by imposing strict controls on arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. She said that no private school will now be allowed to increase fees by more than 5 percent annually. Furthermore, if any school has increased fees by more than a cumulative 15 percent during the last three years, it will have to refund the excess amount collected from parents.

The MLA said that more than 32 lakh students studying in approximately 7,800 private schools across Punjab and their families will directly benefit from this decision. She further stated that the government has directed all private schools to upload complete details of their fee structure for the last four years on the designated portal within the next 10 days, ensuring transparency in the fee system.

Mrs. Jeevanjot Kaur said that under the new ordinance, transport charges, building funds, and all other charges collected from students will also be considered part of tuition fees. This will prevent schools from collecting additional amounts under different heads. She added that strict action has been provided for schools violating the rules, including a fine of Rs. 50,000 for the first violation, Rs. 1 lakh for the second violation, and cancellation of recognition for the third violation.

She stated that the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann considers education a service rather than a business and remains committed to providing every child with quality and affordable education. She further said that District Regulatory Committees headed by Deputy Commissioners will examine every proposal related to fee increases, making the entire process transparent and accountable.

In conclusion, Mrs. Jeevanjot Kaur thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the Punjab Government, stating that this decision would prove to be a milestone in the education sector and would provide relief to lakhs of parents from unnecessary financial burden.
