SGPC Urges PM Modi to Reopen Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, Dhami Calls It a Matter of Sikh Sentiments

Amritsar, July 13, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Union Government to take immediate steps for the reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, which connects India with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan.

In his letter, Dhami said the corridor holds immense religious significance for Sikhs worldwide as it provides access to the historic shrine where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the final years of his life and preached the principles of Kirat Karo (earn by honest labour), Naam Japo (remember the Divine) and Vand Chhako (share with others), along with the message of universal brotherhood and welfare of humanity.

Millions of Sikhs Emotionally Connected to Kartarpur Sahib

Dhami said Sikh devotees across the world have a deep emotional and spiritual attachment to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, and have always cherished the opportunity to pay obeisance at the sacred shrine.

He recalled that the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor in November 2019, coinciding with the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, fulfilled a long-cherished aspiration of the global Sikh community. Since then, lakhs of pilgrims have visited the historic shrine to offer prayers.

Corridor Closure Has Caused Deep Disappointment

The SGPC President noted that the suspension of movement through the corridor due to prevailing security circumstances between India and Pakistan has caused deep disappointment and anguish among Sikhs across the globe.

He pointed out that the demand for reopening the corridor is not new and said the SGPC has repeatedly passed resolutions urging the Centre to restore the pilgrimage route.

Dhami also reminded the Prime Minister that the SGPC had earlier submitted memoranda to the Punjab Governor and the Union Home Minister, requesting early intervention in the matter.

Calls for Diplomatic and Administrative Measures

In his letter, Dhami said reopening the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor is not merely about facilitating a religious pilgrimage but also about respecting the religious sentiments of millions of Sikh devotees.

He appealed to Prime Minister Modi to consider the matter on priority, keeping in view the unique religious importance of the shrine associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

The SGPC President urged the Prime Minister to direct the concerned ministries to initiate the necessary diplomatic and administrative measures for the immediate restoration of the corridor.

Expressing hope for a positive response, Dhami said the Sikh community expects the Centre to consider the appeal with sensitivity so that devotees from across the world can once again pay obeisance at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib.
