Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia on Thursday felicitated Special Olympics swimmer Bhavik Atwal, a resident of Jalandhar, in recognition of his outstanding achievements at the state and national levels, describing him as an inspiration for society and a shining example of determination and perseverance.
Congratulating the young swimmer, the Deputy Commissioner said athletes like Bhavik demonstrate that no obstacle is insurmountable for those with courage, dedication and an unwavering resolve.
“Bhavik has proved that determination and self-belief can overcome every challenge,” Walia said, adding that the swimmer’s achievements had brought laurels not only to his family and Jalandhar district but also inspired countless children with special needs.
He also congratulated Bhavik’s parents, saying that the success of children is built on the dedication, encouragement and continuous support provided by their families.
Impressive Medal Haul
Bhavik Atwal delivered an impressive performance at the Special Olympics Swimming Nationals 2024 held in Mandya, Karnataka, where he won:
- Gold Medal in the 25-metre Freestyle
- Bronze Medal in the 50-metre Freestyle
- Bronze Medal in the 25×4-metre Freestyle Relay
Earlier, he had won a Silver Medal in the 25-metre Freestyle at the Special Olympics Bharat National Championship 2016 in Mumbai.
He further added two more Silver Medals in the 25-metre and 50-metre Freestyle events at the Special Olympics Punjab 2017 held in Patiala.
Continuing his excellent form, Bhavik recently won two Gold Medals in the 25-metre and 50-metre Freestyle events in another swimming competition, reaffirming his growing stature in Special Olympics swimming.
Recognising his achievements, the Punjab Government recently awarded him ₹1.35 lakh as sports incentive.
Praise for Special Olympics Association
The Deputy Commissioner also appreciated the efforts of the District Special Olympics Association, Jalandhar, for promoting sports among children with special needs.
He assured the association of the district administration’s full support in encouraging sports and ensuring the holistic development of specially-abled children.
Among those present on the occasion were District Special Olympics Association, Jalandhar President Rajeev Dwivedi, Secretary Poonam, Bhavik’s father Vikram Atwal, mother Sakshi Atwal, brother Saurav Atwal, and members of the association.
