A man accused of assaulting a Booth Level Officer (BLO) engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Patiala has been arrested, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Dr Himanshu Aggarwal said on Friday.
The incident occurred recently in Anand Nagar-B, where the BLO was carrying out voter verification work as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Dr Aggarwal said the matter was taken seriously by Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anindita Mitra, who directed that any misconduct or attack on Booth Level Officers would be dealt with firmly.
According to the District Election Officer, the accused allegedly assaulted the Booth Level Officer of Booth No. 113 after the official sought voter-related information from him as part of the SIR process.
Following the incident, Tripuri Police Station registered an FIR against the accused under Sections 115(2), 351(3), 221 and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Safety of BLOs Prioritised
Dr Aggarwal said that, in compliance with the directions of CEO Punjab Anindita Mitra, comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and security of Booth Level Officers engaged in the Special Intensive Revision exercise across the district.
Reiterating the administration’s commitment to protecting election staff, he said any attempt to obstruct or intimidate officials performing election-related duties would invite strict legal action.
The District Election Officer also appealed to all voters in Patiala district to extend full cooperation to Booth Level Officers during the voter verification process and help ensure that the Special Intensive Revision exercise is completed smoothly and peacefully.
