Office Secretary of Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjeet, Jagjit Singh Kohli, and Media In-charge Tejinder Singh Pannu, in a joint written statement, alleged that Ravneet Singh Bittu is attempting to turn the film Satluj, based on the life and struggle of internationally recognized human rights activist Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra, into a communal issue in order to create divisions between Hindus and Sikhs.
The two leaders stated that Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra fought for human rights without any discrimination. During his campaign, many Hindu families also received justice whose sons had allegedly been killed in fake police encounters. They said that Khalra was a devoted Sikh who carried out his mission impartially and without prejudice. If the majority of the victims happened to be Sikhs, they asked, how could Khalra be held responsible for that?
They further said that Bittu should also recognize that, according to their statement, those accused of committing atrocities included individuals from his grandfather’s time as well as K.P.S. Gill and Ajit Singh Sandhu, all of whom wore turbans. They alleged that by trying to provoke one community against another, Bittu was reflecting the same divisive mindset they attribute to his grandfather, whom they accused of sacrificing Sikh youth to preserve his political position.
Concluding the statement, the two leaders said that the people of Punjab remain deeply committed to the impartial ideals of Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra and will always pay tribute to his work. They asserted that attempts by people like Bittu to create communal divisions would not succeed.
They also appealed to Singh Sabhas, social organizations, and people with an impartial outlook to organize collective screenings of the film so that more people can watch it. According to them, this would further strengthen communal harmony and solidarity among justice-loving Punjabis.
