Indian Air Force got off to a winning start in the 41st Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament by defeating BSF Jalandhar 2-1 after a tough contest. The tournament which started at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium was inaugurated by Punjab Government Cabinet Minister Mahinder Bhagat, introduced with the teams.
Speaking on this occasion, Mahindra Bhagat said that only through sports, the leprosy of drugs can be removed from Punjab. So it is very important to connect children with sports. Chief guest was welcomed by Jalandhar Deputy Commssioner Himashu Agarwal IAS President Surjit Hockey Society.
On this occasion, the tournament was started by cutting the cake. The inaugural match was played between Indian Navy and former winners Punjab and Sind Bank.
The game was only played for 27 minutes when a technical fault occurred in the floodlights due to which the match could not be completed and the rest of the match will be played at 8 am on Sunday. During the opening ceremony, the girls of St. Francis School, Kartarpur, presented a magnificent Gidha.
In the match played earlier in Pool A, BSF Jalandhar gave a tough fight to the Indian Air Force but could not win the match. In the 28th minute of the second quarter of the game, Indian Air Force’s Lavdeep Singh scored a penalty stroke to make the score 1-0.
In the 54th minute of the game, BSF Jalandhar’s Gurjot Singh scored a penalty corner to make the score 1-1. In the last minute of the game, Indian Air Force’s Lavdeep Singh converted a penalty corner goal to win the match 2–1 and secure three points in the league round.
MLA Raman Arora, Rajan Berry of Indian Oil, Olympian Surinder Singh Sodhi, Pawan Kumar Tinu, Amritpal Singh, Amrik Singh Puar General Secretary Hockey Punjab, Kripal Singh Matharu, Lakhwinder Pal Singh Khaira, Kulwinder Singh Thiara, Charanjit Singh Channi were present during today’s matches.
