Trudeau on farmer agitation in India: Canada will defend rights of peaceful protest

New Delhi, December 1, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has come out in support of agitating farmers.

Trudeau is the first world leader to comment on farmers’ protests in India.

“Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protest,” Trudeau said, backing Indian farmers who have intensified their agitation against the new farm laws, noting that the situation is “concerning”.

At an online event to mark the 551st birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev, Trudeau said, “The situation is concerning and we’re all very worried about family and friends. I know that’s a reality for many of you. Let me remind you, Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protest.”

In a video posted by the World Sikh Organization, Trudeau said, “We believe in the importance of dialogue and that’s why we’ve reached out to multiple means, directly to the Indian authorities to highlight our concerns. This is a moment for all of us to pull together.”

It is pertinent to mention here that farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and some other states had been camping on the outskirts of Delhi, in the biggest protest by farmers in years.

The farmers are demanding the withdrawal of three recently passed Agri-laws which they have termed as anti-farmer. They also want the Centre to scrap ordinances regarding Electricity and Stubble burning.

The farmers have braced water cannons, tear gas, and police barricades in biting cold to reach the borders of Delhi.

The Punjabi diaspora has come out hugely in support of farmers’ cause and has been openly expressing their concern on social media.
