The Trinamool Congress on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and Asansol (Dakshin) Assembly constituency candidate Agnimitra Paul of orchestrating a conspiracy to have her own convoy attacked during the first phase of polling in West Bengal.
The allegation comes days after Paul claimed that her convoy was vandalised during the polling, allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters.
Speaking to IANS, Trinamool Congress leader Sohrab Ali said, “Regarding this conspiracy, one of the key conspirators, Asgar Ali, is already in police custody. Asgar Ali will easily reveal the full details of this plot — how this was all planned and who was involved in it. The police are currently investigating this matter.”
“I, too, acknowledge that the convoy was damaged. I also accept that stones were indeed hurled at it. However, how and why did this happen? I am levelling a specific allegation against Agnimitra Paul, that this entire episode is a conspiracy hatched by her.”
The Trinamool leader also asked why such incidents were not reported elsewhere, even though several cases of attacks and vandalism were reported across West Bengal on Thursday, the first phase of polling in the state.
“Across the entirety of West Bengal, people are contesting elections, candidates from the BJP, the CPI-M, and various other parties. Yet, nothing of this sort happens to any of them. Why did it happen specifically with her (Agnimitra Paul)? And why does it happen every single time? No other candidate moves around with such excessive pomp and security paraphernalia — the kind of entourage she travels with,” Sohrab Ali said.
Calling the attack a “drama orchestrated by the BJP MLA”, the Trinamool leader added, “By and large, everyone has realised that this is a conspiracy orchestrated by Agnimitra Paul. The police must conduct a thorough and rigorous investigation into this matter to identify and interrogate everyone involved in this conspiracy.”
Paul had alleged that the Trinamool Congress routinely resorts to violence during elections.
Describing the sequence of events, BJP leader Paul said, “We had gone to Rahmat Nagar, which is a minority area. There we had gone to Rahmat Nagar High School for supervision. When we came out and got inside the car, they (Trinamool workers) threw stones and broke the glass of the car from behind.”
Speaking to IANS, she also claimed that Trinamool Congress workers engage in violence during every election.
Accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of being behind the attack, Paul said, “In every election, Trinamool does this. In the 2022 bye-election, they also pelted stones and broke the car.”
“Trinamool thinks that Muslims are their property. BJP has also spoken out for the Muslims, as they are my brothers. Such things won’t work, I am going there again,” she added.
She also levelled serious allegations against the party, saying, “The Trinamool Congress is a party full of criminals and goons.”
Paul also alleged that the Trinamool Congress had brought in people from other states ahead of the elections.
Despite a record voter turnout during the first phase of the West Bengal elections, several incidents like these have raised concerns over law and order during the electoral process.(Agency)
