The stage is set for the Surjit 5S (Five-A-Side) Women’s Hockey Gold Cup, here at local Surjit ‘Five-A-Side’ Astroturf Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park, begins today (April 5)
According to Iqbal Singh Sandhu, CEO of the Surjit Hockey Society that this women’s hockey tournament will be played on ‘league-cum-knockout’ basis, in which 8 renowned teams of the country will participate to keep the name alive of the former captain of the Indian hockey team and former Olympian late Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa.
Sandhu further informed that Punjab-XI, Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala, Sports Authority of India Sonepat and Northern Railway Delhi have been placed in Pool-A while Central Railway Mumbai, CRPF Delhi, Haryana-XI and Union Bank of India, Mumbai are put in Pool-B.
In this ‘Five-A-Side’ hockey tournament, total of 16 matches of 15-5-15 minutes each will be played. The semi finals, third and fourth position matches and final matche of the tournament will be played on April 7.
These matches will be played under ‘Day & Flood Lights’ and the entry of spectators will be totally free. The cash prize of ₹ 2.57 lakh to the teams is sponsored by renowned sports promoter and Chairman of Gakhal Group, USA, who sponsor ₹ 5.51 lakh cash prize to the winning team of the Surjit Hockey Tournament every year.
Similarly, the best player of the tournament will be awarded ₹ 21,000 and the best goalkeeper pocketed ₹ 11,000 with the Late Mrs. Swadesh Chopra Memorial Award.
Playing kits and Sports Kit Bags to teams and officials have been sponsored by the famous Tyka Sports Wear Company and Rakshak Hockey Company, respectively.
The tournament will be formally inaugurated by Mr. Ranjit Singh Tutt (Tutt Brothers, USA), renowned sports promoter, eminent farmer, transporter of USA at 6.30 pm. All the matches of the tournament will be telecast Live on Surjit Hockey Society’s YouTube channel and social media.
On this occasion, the captains of all the teams and the officials of the society were released the kits today.
