The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislative party today condemned the Congress government for bulldozing bills through the Vidhan Sabha even as it took strong exception to the naming of the new upcoming Sports University in Patiala in the name of the grandfather of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
The legislative wing of the SAD said it was shocking that the Congress party passed the entire legislative business of the Vidhan Sabha in a few minutes without making prior copies of the bills available to the legislators to avoid any discussion on the same. “This is a serious lapse of parliamentary procedure”, an official release here said.
The legislative wing also took note of the fact that the Congress government had ridden roughshod over the sentiments of the people and refused to consider demands for naming the Sports University in memory of Chhote Sahibzade Baba Zoravar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh.
“This would have been a befitting homage to the supreme sacrifice of the youngest known martyrs in world history, who laid their lives for their faith as well as core human values”, the legislative wing. It said it was a matter of great pain that instead of doing this, the Congress government and its ministers chose to indulge in sycophancy by suggesting the University be name after Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
Stating that every inch of the land of Punjab was indebted to the Chhote Sahibzade for the manner in which they stood up to tyranny as well as their faith, the legislative wing said given an opportunity the SAD-BJP would take concrete steps to dedicate the University in the name of the young martyrs.
The legislative wing also asked the Vidhan Sabha Speaker to provide copies of all Bills being taken up for discussion in advance to the legislators. “The government should not hide the contents of the Bills being taken up by the assembly and should not rely on brute force to pass them subsequently. This is against the very essence of the rich and glorious traditions of this august House”, the legislative wing added. EOM
