SGPC organizes Sikh Martial Arts Gatka competition on Miri Piri Day

On the occasion of Miri Piri Day of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru (master), the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today formally inaugurated flourishing Sikh martial arts Gatka after ardas (prayer). On this occasion, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh and SGPC President Advocate S. Harjinder Singh especially attended this event.

Different Gatka Akharas (academies) showed their talent at the plaza outside Ghanta Ghar (clockhouse) of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib.

Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Harpreet Singh said that Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib inspired us to connect to Gurbani and devotion to strengthen spiritually but at the same time he also asked us to be skilled in Sikh martial arts for physical and political strength.

He inspired the youth and children to connect to Sikh martial arts and practice it.

Meanwhile, SGPC President Advocate S. Harjinder Singh said that Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib exemplified the regal life for the Sikhs by wearing two kirpans (swords) dedicated to the doctrine of Miri Piri. He said the sixth Guru had ordered the Sikhs to offer good horses and arms and had skilled them in martial arts with arms. He said Sikh martial arts Gatka helps in self defence as well as in combating the enemy. He appealed to youth to connect to Sikh martial arts Gatka.

Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib also held a meeting with representatives of Gatka federations, associations, and akharas and inspired them to support in flourishing Sikh martial arts Gatka.

Those who attended the meeting included S. Gurcharan Singh of National Gatka Association of India, S. Gurtej Singh of Shiromani Gatka Federation of India, S. Harcharan Singh and S. Baljinder Singh of Gatka Federation of India, S. Rajinder Singh of Punjab Gatka Association, S. Ravinder Singh of Gatka Association of Jammu and Kashmir, S. Gurcharan Singh of Puratan Sikh Sashtar Vidya Cabinet, Delhi, S. Manjit Singh of Sikh Sashtar Vidya Council, S. Jorawar Singh of Gatka Association Delhi and representatives of different Gatka akharas.

Among those present on this occasion included Dharam Prachar Committee member Bhai Ajaib Singh, S. Sukhwarsh Singh, additional secretary S. Paramjit Singh, S. Partap Singh, assistant secretary S. Kulwinder Singh, S. Balwinder Singh, S. Tejinder Singh, manager S. Sulakhan Singh, in-charge S. Shahbaz Singh and more officials.
